I like the mixture of both (High, mid, and low rises). I really am not a fan of Dubai's buildings or skyline. They may be tall, but they lack character. As far as I'm concerned the buildings just don't seem to "flow" or "fit in" but instead they clash as as Dubai is a city competing against itself.
As far as architecture goes, I absolutely love Rome. The old buildings are exquisite. New York is also an amazing mixture of both new and old.

Well places like Edinburgh and Rome are brilliant, fun places to be at ground level whilst modern, 2-dimensional places like Dubai only look good in photos.

Low-rise european style because architects do so much better below 10 stories. Taller buildings are rarely strong architectural statements, just monumental ones.
