The thing with Blackpool is it is improving but it is nowhere near being a holiday destination for most people to take their main holidays. Its main market is for a weekend with the boys or to take the kids to for a day on the rides, trip to the circus or to see the lights.

Do people still make a trip to "see the lights", now that electric illumination is fairly commonplace and accepted?

You are right though, outside the summer holidays weekends are busier so more indoor venues are needed to build up the numbers staying during the weekdays including a conference centre. Regeneration wise there is lots to do in Blackpool but alot is happening over the next ten years to transform large parts of it and I will be leading the way with the tree planting.

Zim, you probably will be leading the way to be honest!
I would recommend Spain. Not to the costas necessarily, but fly to any old place and either rent a car or take trains, and explore the secondary cities and towns. From San Sebastian and Bilbao towards the west is wild, unspoilt and has amazing scenery and food. Or you could do a little tour of Cordoba, Seville and Granada? All very interesting, and again great food and drink - in Andalucia, tapas is usually given free with a drink, so you can bar hop and have dinner for free too. And it's not 'binge drinking' as it's 'cultured' (!), but you still have a nice drink up. Inland Catalonia is quite different too. |

My holidays in the last 10 years, most recent first, have been:
2 weeks snowboarding in Banff, Canada 1 week snowboarding in Tignes, France 1 week snowboarding in Val di Fassa, Italy 1 week snowboarding in Serre Chevalier, France 1 week snowboarding in Morzine, France 1 week snowboarding in La Plagne, France 3 weeks backpacking in Peru and Bolivia 2.5 weeks backpacking in Vietnam and Cambodia 2.5 weeks in Australia Somehow I don't think Blackpool would quite give me what I'm looking for. |

Blackpool offers big fat nothing. Youd have to be really boring and dull person to claim Blackpool is a proper holiday destination.

El Greco, you are slipping. This thread has been open for some time and you have only just slagged Blackpool off.

Only if you're loaded.
Personally Norway didn't do much for me - the cities were small and bland, the scenery was very pretty, but for some reason it just didn't inspire me as much as i wanted it to. |

Copenhagen is very expensive!
I'd say go for Italy for history, culture and great food. Banjul or Cape Verde would be slightly more exotic... |
