Do you know what kind of material used to make this roof? Corn stalks?

Really beautiful & serene villages.

@durio uno: The material is reed. Beautiful but dangerous when the roof is hit by the lightning.

@StormShadow: yes, correct, Drenthe is in the northern part of the Netherlands.

Thanks… in my country Malaysia, some old village houses used the leaves from a type of palm for the roofings (see picture), but never had any problem with lightning.

Perhaps the high level of humidity here prevented the roof from catching fire…??

I´m amazed over the quality of building!

Is it an actual farmer community?

And is it representative for Dutch rural villages?

Yes, I think so. In our country most of the times the lightning comes after a period of dry warm weather.

They were farmer community, but now most houses are only for living. The area is beautiful with forest, so a lot of people like to buy an old farm to spend there time when they are old.

But still some farmers are working here.

The villages are representative for the villages in this part of the Netherlands. Sadly not all villages are this beautiful, in this part you find also places like Barger-Compascuum

If you like the villages you can see more here:

Diphoorn; Sleen; Erm; Westenesch; Zweeloo; Aalden and Noord-Sleen
