Overall the development would be a far better overall use of space (the entire plot kills the street) so any negative campaign would just come across as the horrible urban-sponge turned nimby syndrome, like some of the artists living around here. A far better cause and one that would resonate with crystal sincerity would be if all these independent creative souls would band together and push as a planning priority a formalisation of the oft-quoted panacea of including affordable creative/retail space in these larger developments. Otherwise we might find the ever quickening, multi-thronged rate of 'gentrification' snubbing out the creativity of the entire city.
Hardly any creatives are left in Shoreditch anyway, it went corporate several years ago. The artists and cutting edge bars have moved to Dalston and Hackney Wick. It's an ongoing cycle and the people who want to try to save the Foundary need to understand this.

agreed. and also the fondry is just a sh*thole. there is no two ways about it. if they manage to save that light-bar-style then i think the developers should let hackney counsil rot away and focus their efforts elsewhere. it makes zero sense to save that spot. its a car park and a student bar that thinks punk is still alive.

anyway, the squire proposal looks ok. i like the height and how it balances off the 60s tower block across the street. however im not sure that shoreditch needs landsmarks. more than anything it needs to be knit together to create a more cohesive area all the way from old st to brick lane. whats why i never liked the zahid thing on hoxton sq. it was completely misplaced.

This design appears very surreal, a good and bad quality. Initially I was horrified by the blank wall type design, it looks like a cartoon type giant alien character with a giant eye at the top that perhaps swivels.

However, on looking at the additional sketch images, I like the scale and massing that reinforces the urban form, and the punched hole cladding could be very interesting, particularly at night. This type of perforated glazed wall design also appears to offer privacy to people who are inside while being able to look out through panoramic views without having to have net curtains across the window. Perhaps the large window opening design could do with additional thought.

Hoxton Hotel Plan Upsets Local Boozers, Victorians

A new hotel planned for east London has united two disparate groups in opposition: the Victorian Society, and Hoxton hipsters.

The cylindrical, bronzed aluminium-covered behemoth, part of Park Plaza's idiotically-named "Art'otels" range but with a profile that should see it dubbed the Flip-Top Bin, is proposed for a site on the corner of Old Street and Great Eastern Road. For shame, say local alehounds, as the location is currently home to The Foundry. A group of concerned citizens have started a Save The Foundry campaign, calling for the bar to be re-homed.

The Victorian Society is also opposed to the hotel, albeit for different reasons. It argues that the 350-room, 18-storey structure is too tall for the area, and not in character with the South Shoreditch Conservation Area's "distinctive nineteenth-century industrial character". While those points are debatable -- the junction is already surrounded by a modern hotel and a 70s tower block -- their opposition to the design is justified: it's a ruddy ugly building, and would instantly replace the contraption atop Old Street roundabout as the local eyesore.

There's a full selection of planning application documents on Hackney council's website, and an area to leave a comment, including an option to support or object to the proposal.

Lol- Hands up if this is the same society that describes the nearby Old St roundabout as a tranquil village.

Save the Foundry- Is it that difficult to find another venue, its not as if the area isn't awash with gritty buildings to occupy. You never know they might even find a venue that is better than the current shite hole.

Slight irony to say that the height isn't 'inn keeping' with the area when its almost next to a tower block.
I'm not the greatest fan of this building, but it is an improvment to the area, and I believe the Foundry Savers are open to the option of moving venues, just as long as the Foundry doesn't dissapear, as always its just the local NIMBY groups getting involved that will ultimatley slow this project down, hault development and investment, loss the case and we will end up with a design that is now dated and compromised.

It's not the opposition that's annoying - it's their sheer, stereotypical stupidty.

The Victorian society would prefer the low rise crap that's been built around there as apposed to something half decent because it fits in?? stupid arguments again and again...
