Fishmongers don't smell the same these days
Forgive me for making a personal observation not based on a Daily Mail article or such like, but I bought some cod loin today for tea and when I opened the packet, had a quick sniff, as you do... and well... it just smelled like I remember fishmongers used to smell when I was little. These days they seem to smell more of disinfectant than fish.
Erm... so there. |

Kinda yeah, though that's prob to do with stricter standards on cleaning and hygiene.
Doesn't bother me tbh. |

I remember going to fishmongers by my nan's house back in the Black Country when I was a little kid - probably about 5 or 6. And as soon as I stepped in there, I was hit by a wall of stench. It was something I'd never experienced before, and it was really just a mish mash of smells coming from the fish and the like. I think it might partly be the reason why I'm not so into fish nowadays.
But going to my nan's new fishmongers courtesy of Morrisons, the smell just isn't there. In fact it's just clean air, icy fresh. In a way, I'm kind of glad that they don't pong as much as that fishmongers by my nan's house but it does seem everso clinical...

it is well known that fishmongers in the past often doubled as brothels. The accusation that the smell was somehow down to the fish is quite unfair!

I'd like to offer the hypothesis that I am expressing myself because cod loin is rather more aromatic than a salmon steak.. Or monkfish tail... Sea Bass and erm tiger prawn...
... there is a subtext here that I would of hoped at least mr sebo would have spotted ![]()

There are some great smelly fish shops here in Hong Kong. I am always strangely fascinated by the really large fish heads that are still moving after being chopped off.
