Why some branches are hidden?

I wanted to show my maps freak friend the maps thread in the Euro section but he can't see it and I've noticed I don't see listed the Skybar for example when I'm not logged in. The Skybar responses don't show up when I run a search, that's how I usually check if there's been anything new posted to the threads I've already replied to. Slightly inconvenient.

Also, is there a problem posting single word replies? I wanted to say "thanks" earlier to those who answered my question and some message showed up very briefly with somethng about a moderator, couldn't really read it.
