New year's eve in Chicago?

so, what is it like? what are the options?

I'm really thinking of spending new year's eve in Chicago, even if I'm all by myself. My friends prefer to spend this day here in Brazil w/ fireworks along the beaches...

so I was wondering, even if I go alone, what are the options? I've read a lot about private parties, but that is not what I'm looking for (although I know it's probably because of the weather)...the fireworks displays in lake michigan, are they good?

tks

Well, what do you want to do? As you know, this is the 3rd largest city in the US, and is a world class city where you can find pretty much anything you want to do. Be prepared for the cold though! My coworker from Sao Paulo was in Chicago last January and was miserable. Dress warm!

Fireworks, are they good? Yes, and no. It's cold and crowded...but it's good company and the display is really cool.

This is a useful website, check out the New Year's activities: http://www.centerstagechicago.com/promos/nye/

I'm not a fan of most hotel parties, especially the open ballroom types. The ambiance is decidedly lacking (assuming no Playboy bunnies, of course.) Union Station, Palmer House lobby, or the grand ballroom at Navy Pier would certainly be more memorable.

I spent a 4th of July along a beach in Florida, shooting fireworks out over the water. I'd take that over NYE in Chicago any day. (NYE has always felt like amateur night, so I never cared much for it.)

Agreed, pack prepared for temps as cold as -25C, with strong wind. -30C is not unheard of for lows around Jan 1, too. OTOH, it could he as warm as 10-15C, the weather in the upper midwest USA is that unpredictable.
