In 1989 the Dolphins draft Sammie Smith drom FSU, only to see 3 Canes go after him in the 1st round, including a better RB from Miami named Cleveland Gary who the Dolphins later acquired..!
In 1988 the Dolphins draft Eric Kumerow, only to leave Brett Perriman, Brian Blades, Daniel Stubbs and Matt Patchen go quickly to other teams...! In 1987 the Dolphin draft John Bosa (?!?) leaving 4 Cans to go elsewhere..! In 1984 the Dolphins draft Jackie Shipp, leaving 7 Hurricanes on the board from the first UM National Champoionship team that defeated Nebraska in the 1984 OB game! |

I could have easily gone about the task of naming all the stars that the Dolphins have left on the draft board but it would have been a lot more work---and I would have hijacked my own thread.
And this excersice did reveal an impressive list of names that were gone before the Dolphins had a chance to take them. Nevertheless...there does seem to have been an organizational aversion of drafting CANES! Last edited by theEmbarcadero; November 26th, 2009 at 04:50 AM. |

That's a thorough job of research, Embarcadero, but I'd say it's a mixed-bag from a talent perspective. Some of those Canes players were great...some were very average...some were quickly out of the NFL.
Absolutely, Miami struck out on some guys (Reggie Wayne for instance) or simply made a terrible selection---as every team does---but not always. In that '92 draft, for instance, I'd still take Troy Vincent over the UM guys mentioned. I think what you'd likely find in almost any of those drafts is even BETTER talent from other schools that was bypassed by Miami and a host of other teams. That's just the nature of the draft. For all the 'expertise' involved it's still largely a crapshoot. That's why the Patriots have done such a damn good job drafting in recent years. They load up on picks knowing they'll strike out on some. The Dolphins spent years under Spielman and Mueller doing just the opposite---giving away picks for marginal talent. Thankfully, that is no longer the case. Where we do agree is that the Dolphins probably could have found some Canes gems in later rounds back in that era when the UM roster was loaded and deep. I don't think that's the case today, however, with the program nowhere near as dominant as it once was. (you almost made me barf seeing the names Kumerow and Milner again, btw!)

Yes....we agree. Lot's of bad drafts. I don't want to bother doing the research recquired to prove that we have drafted poorer than most teams in the last 30 years.
We hit a home run with Marino....and Jayson Taylor. Zach and John Offerdahl were awesome. But man...way too many whiffs! Bosa, Kumerow, Milner, Ginn, Avery...and on and on..! Oh...props to Richmond Webb...and Tim Bowens.....and Dwight Stephenson. Lots of love to O.J. McDuffie too. And WHY on earth did we let Chris Chambers go? And why did pick him up when the Bolts let him go. Would be No. 1 on our roster right NOW! |

My point I was trying to make to you is that it is all about the coach, because if he has the greatest talent from UM ,he still has to know how to make this team come together ,the chemistry has to be there. Shula had a strong work ethic as he practiced his player 4 times a day and that is why he had great teams, you have to work hard in the right direction to achieve success.
There are more variables in place too, but it would take a while explaining. Last edited by noland123; December 7th, 2009 at 06:48 PM. |

another thing the miami dolphins should have done....
they should have painted the seats at JRS different colors....that way all those empty seats wouldnt be so obvious on TV... ...man...it is shocking to see a 5-6 team...who is fighting for a playoff spot...who is playing a powerful NE team that is a long time, divisional river---and so many empty seats...WOW!!! |

It certainly did not look like that on TV. There were several times where you could see lots of empty seats. All of the tickets may have sold, but not everyone showed up.
It says a lot when you have a ton of Patriots fans there. They received loud cheers. |

possibly after halftime? patrons tend to dally inside since they built the new food courts. or maybe some fans didn't get the memo about the time change for the game. tickets were being scalped for many multiples of face value prior to the game. it is not uncommon for there to be a large contingent of opposing fans in any stadium, particularly in an attractive place to visit like miami. |

When I was at the Saints game I was arguing with my friend over this. The argument took place in the middle of the second quarter when the Dolphins were doing well, so the butts in seats should have been at the high point then. He was saying the stadium was full, I was saying I there are at least 5,000 empty seats, plus it looked as if black pepper was sprinkled on the crowd, 6,000 or so Saints fans. Maybe many fans in Miami over the past ten years have forgotten what a full stadium looks like.
