Because it's really annoying to first go to the Africa Section

Africa section is being restructured, it's possible you're getting dead links or something. it takes some time for the cache to refresh with the updated links.

Avatars, edit buttons, smilies, thread tags and new reply buttons aren't showing up for me. In fact, none of the forums images are showing up, except for commercial banners. I cleared my cache and cookies, but still nothing. It's been like this since yesterday evening. Do others also have this problem? Any idea on what to do?

i did not get any 500 errors but the site was slow, infact same problem as Christos Greece suffered

Yep, it's very slow. It takes over 30 seconds for pages to load when they should load in no more than 5
