Reports are that the Broad collection will go to a new building in DT SM near the Civic Center and Courthouse. This will house 2000 of Eli's best pieces.
If true, this and the completion of the Expo line and SM Place open air shopping area will make a continuous urban expansion along the coast from Wilshire at least to Rose in Venice. Putting a trolley along Ocean would cap off a very strong tourist area, since the hotels, restaurants, cafes, views and shopping are already there. All the more reason to expedite the Purple Line to the sea. |

not now, for sure; it's mostly 1950's civic buildings and parking lots. But immediately to the north is SM Place, opening this summer, which will be a conduit for the 3rd St. pedestrian traffic. You then get to the Sears building and parking lot, which have potential, being right at the Expo Line terminus; the freeway (which may get covered) and the Civic Center, which is presumably getting a major piece of architecture and a great art collection.
From there, there are large hotels and condo's on the coast and the busy Main St. shopping and nightlife area. It's not hard to picture a lot of activity here if and when Expo and Purple show up, accompanied by the natural (although highly controlled) growth that will occur. |
