The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iaşi (Romanian: Universitatea "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" din Iaşi) is the first modern university in Romania. The University of Iaşi, as it was named at first, was founded one year after the establishment of the Romanian state, by an 1860 decree of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza, under whom the former Academia Mihăileană was converted to a university.

Alexandru Ioan Cuza University is a member of some of the most important university networks and associations: the Coimbra Group (CG), Utrecht Network, European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IAU), University Agency of Francophony (AUF), the Network of Francophone Universities (RUFAC) and also of the Universitaria Consortium (the group of elite Romanian universities).

In 2008, for the third year in a row, the Alexandru Ioan Cuza University was placed first in the national research ranking compiled on the basis of Shanghai criteria.

The university grounds lie on Copou Hill in the northern part of the city.

The main university building was built between 1893 and 1897 on the site of the Iaşi National Theater which had burned down. The Hall of the University, known as The Hall of the Lost Footsteps, served as a parliamentary debating chamber between 1917 and 1918 when, during the Great War, Iaşi was the capital of Romania. In 1967, the painter Sabin Bălaşa started creating a series of strongly romanticized frescoes for the arcades.

Today the university is made up of 15 faculties (History, School of Law, School of Business and Administration, Philosophy, Letters, Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, School of Pedagogy, Geography, Orthodox Theology, Catholic Theology, and Sport) with more than 38,000 students.


Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iaşi



The Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iaşi (in Romanian: Universitatea Tehnică "Gheorghe Asachi" din Iaşi) is a university in Iaşi, founded in 1813. It has the oldest tradition in engineering education and is highly ranked among the 56 institutions of higher state education in Romania.

n 1813 the scholar Gheorghe Asachi set up the first centre for technical education taught in Romanian, beginning with a civil engineering class which was later developed within the Michaelian Academy (1835) and The "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University in Iaşi. The "Gheorghe Asachi" ("Gh. Asachi" for short) Polytechnic Institute of Iaşi was founded in 1937 as a separate institution, drawing together a number of engineering departments in an institution independent of the Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iaşi.

“Gr. T. Popa” University of Medicine and Pharmacy Iasi is a student- centered university that provides opportunities for lifelong learning to a diverse range of students within a culture of scholarship and development of knowledge.

“Gr. T. Popa” University of medicine and Pharmacy Iasi is recognized as a leading modern regional university, with an international reputation committed to serving the needs of its students and its regional communities.

Presently it trains 500 students in each year of study meaning 3000 students among which approximately 580 are foreign students. The teaching staff comprises 600 highly trained faculty members, in 72 preclinical and clinical disciplines.

The faculty trains almost 1000 resident physicians in all specialties, 800 doctoral students in 36 specialties and offers methodological guidance and information updates to specialist doctors from all countries in the Moldavia region.

The University is a complex higher education institution, comprising six faculties (Medicine, Pharmacy,Dentistry, Kinesiology and Physical Therapy, Biomedical Engineering, Midwifery). In addition, it is home two eight colleges (General Nursing, Dental Technique, Dental Nursing, Audiology, Balneotherapy and Rehabilitation, Medical Cosmetics, Hygiene and Public Health, Pharmaceutical Technique).
