MALACCA: The Malacca Government has been asked to formulate strategies to promote the new Malacca International Airport as the main gateway for visitors from neighbouring countries and to optimise its usage.

Speaking when opening the airport in Batu Berendam here, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the airport had modern facilities to attract tourists, including medical tourists, and investors.

“This is the advantage of having an airport. There will be an increase in the number of visitors and investors while medical tourism will also see an upturn,” he said.
It’s official: Najib stamping his mark after opening the Malacca International Airport in Batu Berendam yesterday. Among those witnessing the opening is Mohd Ali (at the Prime Minister’s right) and Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha (right).

Najib, who is on a one-day visit to the state, earlier arrived on a special aircraft at the airport which the Government plans to turn into a hub for medical tourism.

He said among the aspects which the state government should focus on was connectivity by attracting more airlines such as Malaysia Airlines, Firefly and AirAsia to operate from there.

New destinations, such as Medan in Indonesia, should also be identified, he added. Among the earliest airlines to operate at the airport was Indonesia’s Riau Airlines, serving the Pekan Baru-Melaka sector, he said.

Najib said the “Malacca” brand was renowned internationally due to its historical heritage.

He said developing modern elements such as the airport would further put Malacca prominently on the global map, adding that the aviation sector had a huge multiplying effect to the tune of 12.5 times.

At a news conference later at Seri Bendahara, after meeting Malacca Barisan Nasional leaders, Najib was asked on the Malacca government’s proposal that the RM60mil loan from the Federal Government to upgrade the airport be converted into assistance.

“We’ll see,” Najib said, adding that it would be discussed with Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam.

Meanwhile, Mohd Ali said the airport would be among the busiest airports in Malaysia as there were also non-commercial flights, run by the Malaysian Flying Academy, operating there.

Last year, the Malacca airport handled 23,751 passengers.

Use new airport to boost tourism, says Najib
2010/02/05
By Jason Gerald John

MALACCA: Malacca cannot rely on the history of the state alone to promote tourism.

The state government should formulate strategies to promote the state as a gateway for visitors from neighbouring countries and as a medical tourism hub now that it has a new RM190 million airport in Batu Berendam.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the state government should optimise the use of the airport by attracting more airlines.

Najib said with a modern and bigger Malacca International Airport, the state would surely see an increase in the number of visitors and investors and also pave the way to turn Malacca into a medical tourism hub in the region.

"Imagine how huge the spin-offs will be if we can bring in one million visitors through the Malacca International Airport.

"This is why I am calling for the state to take full advantage of the new airport and promote it further.

"For this, the state government must work closely with the Tourism Ministry," he said at the opening of the airport here.

Also present were Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Abu Seman Yusop, the prime minister's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, and Ali's wife, Datin Seri Asmah Abdul Rahman.

Riau Airlines from Indonesia is already operating from the airport to Pekan Baru in Indonesia.

"I hope to see it increasing its flights to cover Medan," Najib said.

Meanwhile, Ali said medical tourism was among the 12 sub-sectors introduced by the state in promoting tourism.

"Health tourism attracted 70,815 patients in 2008 and 51,511 last year. A total of 67,175 of the patients in 2008 were from Indonesia. Medical tourism also brought in RM135 million for Malacca last year."

He also said Singapore's Lion Air was expected to operate from the airport next month.

LTAM Tarik Pelancong, Pelabur
MELAKA TERSOHOR SEANTERO DUNIA - NAJIB

State govt proposes to take over Melaka airport from MAHB

January 29, 2010, Friday

KUCHING: The recent proposal by the government to takeover Melaka Airport from Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) may help to further reduce the company’s operational costs but the financial impact will only be seen at a later date.To note, Melaka government had recently expressed interest in taking over the management of the new RM190 million international airport terminal in Batu Berendam. Chief Minister Datuk Ali Rustam said the government and its partner, Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd had forwarded the offer to the present operator, MAHB.

OSK Research Sdn Bhd (OSK Research) in its research report said the joint takeover plan had been submitted to the Economic Planning Unit that had in return asked both parties to negotiate with MAHB to reach an agreement

The old Melaka Airport, which recorded about 50,000 passengers a year, was in a loss making situation. Despite the fact that the new airport was undergoing an expansion and would soon be upgraded to an international airport, it would take a while before its annual passenger figures cross the one million mark or becomes operationally profitable.

Therefore, the Chief Minister’s request to lower the airport tax may also be well compensated by the government under the new operating agreement, which clearly differentiates MAHB’s socio-economic role from commercial accountability.

To recap, the new terminal could accommodate up to 1.5 million passengers a year compared with the old terminal, which could only handle 300,000 passengers per annum. The upgraded runway would allow Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircrafts to take off but only one international route to Riau, Indonesia was recorded at the moment, the research firm added.

As Melaka had joined the World Heritage List of the United Nation Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) since 2008, the historical state would attract more leisure travellers in the longer term and in turn boost the air passenger numbers.

However, with an annual capacity of only 1.5 million passengers compared with the near 50 million passengers handled by MAHB, the financial losses may be limited despite the bright long-term prospects.

Notwithstanding the current factors, OSK Research pegged the fair value at RM4.22 per share based on 16 times financial year 2010 earnings per share.

Assuming equal arrivals & departures, something like 32.5 pax per day
Not enough to fill up a F50 nor ATR72

BTW,

It's even more worrying with 24k pax a year, no ?
And how much has been dumped into this adventure ? RM190 million ?

Poor journalistic skill, likely just parroting whatever spinmasters want to be spun
Simple investigation will show Lion Air is Indonesia based, NOT Singapore
