I never realized Lacrosse was so hilly and had such a nice main street feel to the downtown area. Well, I suppose I didn't have any impression at all. This was very enlightening!

yeah I ran across a few pics and was going to post them in the Midwest thread but then I thought I'll make a thread so I can post a bunch of them. I've been in La Crosse a few times and it is a very beautiful city and has a real nice downtown area and riverfront.

I would put La Crosse down as the third best city in Wisconsin, after Milwaukee and Madison. Very cool downtown, the UW-L keeps the city young. And the landscape is quite beautiful.

I'm from La Crosse, but live in Milwaukee now. They've taken good care of their downtown. The vast majority of the city is flat, until you get to the bluffs on the eastern edge of the city. The view from there extends to the bluffs across the river in Minnesota. It does tend to slope down gradually towards the Mississippi River though in the downtown area.
I love the pictures of the old buildings, but my favorite is the picture of the La Crosse River meandering through the marsh (14th one down). I have better access to so many more things living in Milwaukee, but the instant access to nature (not mere parkland) is the thing I miss the most about La Crosse. |

I was born there but have no recollection because we moved soon thereafter. Good town though

yeah, i've always really liked the topography of the state over there... in some places it is downright almost mountainous with those sharp bluffs dropping down right into the mississippi... that's one of the great things about Wisconsin: it's not a "flat" state like so many other midwestern states. it actually has some wrinkles and bumps that make it interesting.

Thanks for posting these. The Mississippi bluff country is one of my favorite parts of the Midwest.

This is the most significant city in Wisconsin that I haven't been to yet. And it's only a couple hours away.
It looks wonderful from the photos and seems to share a lot of geographic similarities with Cincinnati.

LaCrosse is a great little city. I especially like the downtown streetscape--lots of nice old buildings! I'd also rank in #3 as my favorite WI city after Madison/Milwaukee. The bluffs along that part of the Mississippi River are very scenic. Even though its longer, I'll often drive I-90 to Hwy 61 coming back to the Twin Cities from Madison, Milwaukee, Chicago (or points east). Its well worth the extra time.
