I love historical photos of the Gold Coast for their nostaglic value. To go from a typical holiday town to major city in the space of a few decades is amazing.
Nobody in the 1950's or 1960's were thinking it would become what it is now.

Marineland didn't become Seaworld, the two used to co-exist, seperatly owned. I can even remember (just) going to Marine World. Seaworld has always been further North on the Spit.
Seaworld which was originally Ski Gardens, a water skiing show, was located in its present site on the spit from 1971, the name changed (and they got dolphins to add to the ski show and compete with Marineland) in 1972. In the mid/late 70's they bought out Marineland, moved its marine life to Sea World and it turned it into a bird park and then Andalucia Park for a few years (a Spanish dancing horse show). Maybe they should have themed it Outback Spectacular Horses, because that seems to be going great guns nowadays. In the late 70's, early 80's Seaworld got the rides (mostly to compete with the new Dreamworld). Magic Mountain at Miami was pretty cool in those days too (as was Grundy's in the Paradise Centre, Cav Av). 1977 Marineland ![]() 1977 Seaworld ![]() ![]() 1982 Grundy's (waterslides at front and arcades, rides and food court in the Paradise Centre) ![]() Found these on a theme parks web site (there is also a good article) http://www.parkz.com.au/forums/index...Magic+mountain early 80's Magic Mountain (the first water slide I ever went on) ![]() ![]() 2006 Aerial by me, Sea World and you can see where Marineland used to be, closer to Surfers on the Spit, and now the Sheraton Mirage.
