Questions on living and working in Slovenia
Dober dan,
Hello guys from Slovenia ![]() My Name is Ronald, i'm from Austria (live in the region of Burgenland in Eisenstadt). Since 2005 i'm a loyal friend of Slovenia, and i found my love for this fascinating country. Every year i reside in Portoroz for 1-2 weeks. In September 2006 i was the whole month in Portoroz fur curing my bronchial disease. The main reason why i want to move to slovenia is my bronchial disease. On the coast its much better as in austria. Let it make short: I want to work and live in Slovenia, in the Obalna Region ( KP). I feel very well there and i also have a few friends in the meantime. ![]() Slovenia is a very modern country with good infrastructure, good health care and has lesser Bureaucracy like Austria (this is my opinion and my expierence in Slovenia). My question is how difficult it is, to find a job without speaking the slovenian language. Well i must say, by now, i have already a basic knowledge of slovenian language (little conversation, time, counting, asking for info). Several times i tried to find a job in Slovenia, i also went to AXENT d.o.o. in Koper in 2006, but they had nothing for me, because my slovenian is not enough ![]() On the other hand there are a few hundreds austrian living in Slovenia, and i know that they also don't speak slovenian. How did they found those positions? How do they speak with their slovenian collegs? English? A few of them are working in branches of austrian firms (Uniqa, Wiener Städtische, GRAWE etc.) Yes i know the salary is not so high like in Austria, but in the last years it becomes better. Well, money for me is important but its not the most important thing for me. But the others? Hope somebody of you guys can help a little bit. Thanks, hvala lepa, Ronald Last edited by Ronald34; May 8th, 2010 at 02:25 PM. |

Hm.. Interesting. Well to look for a job is quite a bad time right now. The ''recesion'' made a lot of new unemployed. Is there a specific type of work you are currently involved or have an education in? Because on the beach, as I see there is jobs in tourism and Luka Koper.

Hello Struckar,
Thanks for your answer. Well, i've been working in austria in the social insurance institute, its nearly the same system like in Slovenia. From 1996 to 2004 i was also working as a paramedic in the ambulance service within the red cross organisation ( as a volunteer in my freetime). Of course i prefer a job in this fields, but also thinking about the possibility to be self employed. Regards Ronald |

Well there is a large hospital on the hill above Koper and Izola (I think it's 3rd or 4th biggest in Slovenia). As i believe there is a lot of tourists from german speaking countries, so if you get an upgrade on Slovenian language, that would be a big possibility. I do strongly advise learning Slovene, a quick course and a lot of practice in the real enviroment. That will double your possibilities (you probably know that yourself). I don't really know the work system of any kind, due to that I'm still a student, but you must note, that maybe there is less bureaucracy here, but the taxes are sky high. So another suggestion would be, after learning more and more language (SLO), go and search more, it isn't really easy finding a job anywhere (and especially a good one).

hello struckar
thanks for your answer. yes you are right; slovenian language at least a good level is absolutely necessary. My experiences are also that the most slovenian speak also very good english, on the coast of course also italian and german in the region of Maribor and Oberkrain. The highest income tax in slovenia is 41 %, for example in austria its 50 % (!). Regards, |

My suggestion, open your own business on the coast in connection with Austrian and German market. You should find something unique on business field. Of course everything depends on your experience and you need some Euros for beginning.

learn slovenian then you can look for job in social insurrance sector like every other citizen. learning language is a must if you wanna intergrate and find an employer like that. I also learned french before going to france.
![]() of course, there is other possibility - your own bussines, in this case you don't necessarily have to learn slovenian, but it will be harder to start. |
