Smart and Dumb U.S. States

States Ranked: Smartest to Dumbest

The smartest state in the union for the second consecutive year is Massachusetts.

The dumbest, for the third year in a row, is New Mexico.

These are the findings of the Education State Rankings, a survey by Morgan Quitno Press of hundreds of public school systems in all 50 states. States were graded on a variety of factors based on how they compare to the national average. These included such positive attributes as per-pupil expenditures, public high school graduation rates, average class size, student reading and math proficiency, and pupil-teacher ratios. States received negative points for high drop-out rates and physical violence.

How does YOUR state rank?

looks about right, higher standards usually reflect better performance.

also, the southwest is having to educate Native Americans and Mexicans...which hurts the scores I'm sure.

Smart states in blue and dumb states in red. Actaully, I'm I don't even consider myself a liberal democrat. I thought this was funny.

The list doesn't surprise me. Also, it doesn't surprise me that it coincides with the red/blue map.

For the most part it follows the election results, but again, the election was still pretty close in even many of the blue states near the top. As it was for red states like Iowa and Virginia and they're pretty high. I dunno about Montana.

You could pretty much make a correlation with poverty/per capita income and other demographic components and get that list.

If Massachusetts had the same demographics as California or Arizona, it would be at the bottom.

Here's an important truth: State funding of Education & Teacher Qualification have little to do with where a state is ranked, as most states have roughly the same standards, with regard to teacher certification and curriculum (content and delivery).

so physical violence has a direct correlation to intelligence eh? that is certainly an interesting take on things...it seems through out history many wise people have chosen violence over non violence...
