Bahrain seeks CP as partner

Bahrain has approached the Charoen Pokphand Group to invest in the country's agricultural businesses to improve its position as the food hub for the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) nations.

The island state is located at the centre of the GCC's six oil-rich states, and it has an efficient logistics network that could enable the country to become the region's core food distributor, said Nabeel Al Tattan, executive vice-president and head of Middle East and North Africa investments for Al Salam Bank.

In addition, Bahrain is seeking to establish production points within the country and other the GCC states to serve its food security needs, a CP Group source said.

Al Salam Bank contacted CP Group to consider potential partnership opportunities in agricultural production - livestock, aquaculture and rice - to serve Bahrain and the GCC states, which have a population of 36 million and include Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Thailand exported about 4.3 billion baht worth of food including fishery products, rice and fruits to GCC nations in 2007.

The GCC's emerging markets present Thailand with strong trade opportunities. Asean is also considering a feasibility study on free trade agreements with GCC.

Bahrain has offered different types of partnerships, such as joint ventures, foreign-own investment, or a build-operate transfer format, a source said.

Recent bilateral talks yielded positive results. The Thai agribusiness company plans to send delegation to Bahrain, led by CP Group president and CEO Adirek Sripratak, to discuss the investment opportunities further.

CP Group was also approached earlier by the Philippine government to invest in agriculture and related businesses in the Philippines. The group, Thailand's leading agribusiness conglomerate, has major investments in many foreign countries, such as China, Indonesia and India. It has recently invested as well in Russia's livestock sector.

Bahrain Bank, CP to form strategic alliance for agro-industrial

Bahrain-based Al Salam Bank yesterday signed a memorandum of understanding with Charoen Pokphand Group to form a strategic alliance for agro-industrial investments.

As the bank diversifies into the agricultural sector it will support the CP Group to further expand its business interests in the Middle East and North Africa, which consists of 20 countries with a combined population of 300 million.

Both Al Salam and CP Group will jointly identify suitable ventures that will generate high returns on investment, while playing a proactive role in addressing food security in the region.


The alliance will carry out detailed feasibility studies to gauge the viability in various target agribusiness sectors, including livestock, staple foods, aquaculture and perishables.

The studies will cover technical, financial, markets and employ due diligence, to identify target markets in the Middle East and North Africa.

Yousif Abdulla Taqi, board member and chief executive officer of Al Salam Bank-Bahrain, said that forming a partnership with CP Group, a major agro-industrial conglomerate, would improve the bank's competitiveness through its technical expertise.

"This alliance is in line with Al Salam's mission to provide unique investment opportunities that meet investors' objectives and risk appetite. We are also proud to support the region in addressing the critical issue of food security," he said.

"Although Bahrain will be used as a hub, our target market will cover the Mena [Middle East and North Africa] region. The projects will play an important role in creating job opportunities for Bahrainis."

Mena comprises Algeria, Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, the Palestinian Group, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Yemen.

The region has a gross economic product of US$1.53 trillion (Bt52.4 trillion).

Eam Ngamdamronk, vice chairman of CP Group, said it was a flexible agreement in which investment could be made in Bahrain, Thailand and also in third countries.

Both sides will jointly set up working groups to study potential business opportunities.


"Investment in any project will be supplied by Bahrain, while CP Group will provide knowledge and expertise to support them," Eam said.

Eam added that the partnership with Al Salam Bank signified the intent to establish Bahrain as the "Halal Food Hub" of the Mena region.

This alliance represents CP Group's first joint venture with an Islamic bank as part of the Kingdom's vision to become "The Kitchen of the World".

Setting up an integrated halal food company that invests in farming, food processing, packaging and distribution is an example of CP Group's plans to establish a specialised management team with an extensive track record in the agricultural and food industries, said Eam.

أبدى رجال أعمال ارتياحهم لتأكيد صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة رئيس الوزراء وصاحب السمو الملكي الأمير سلمان بن حمد آل خليفة ولي العهد على أهمية الانفتاح بالنسبة للاقتصاد البحريني، وضرورة استمرار الانفتاح الذي يعزز تنافسية البحرين ويشجع على استقطاب مزيد الاستثمارات.
وشددوا على أن القيادة حريصة على استمرار عجلة النمو الاقتصادية وبقاء البحرين جاذبة للمستثمرين، وهي تعي تماماً مخاطر القوانين التي تقيد حريات الناس وخصوصاً الأجانب مما يجعل البحرين بلداً طارداً للاستثمارات.
وقال رجال الأعمال إن القطاع الخاص يقف إلى جانب القيادة ويعاضدها في طريق تعزيز النمو وتوليد الوظائف للبحرينيين واستقطاب الاستثمارات الأجنبية.
وكان صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة رئيس الوزراء الموقر استقبل صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير سلمان بن حمد آل خليفة ولي العهد نائب القائد الأعلى رئيس مجلس التنمية الاقتصادية وذلك بديوان سمو رئيس الوزراء أمس الأول حيث أكدا سموهما أن الاقتصاد بحاجة دائماً الى الانفتاح، وان مملكة البحرين بلد منفتح على العالم بحضاراته وثقافاته المختلفة، وهذا الإنفتاح لم يكن يوما على حساب الهوية البحرينية وما تتميز به من خصوصية، بل كان دائما معززا ًومسانداً للتطور الاقتصادي ولمتطلباته الاجتماعية والثقافية والمعيشية.
وأشار سموهما إلى أن المنطقة تشهد انفتاحا غير مسبوق، وبدأت تفتح الأبواب التي كانت مغلقة، وان البحرين جزء من هذه المنطقة، وتراجعها خطوة عن الانفتاح في الوقت الذي يتقدم فيه الغير خطوات سيؤثر على موقعها الاقتصادي الريادي إقليميا ودوليا وعلى قدراتها التنافسية.
وقال رجل الأعمال فاروق المؤيد: «إن القطاع الخاص يؤيد بقوة ما تضمنه بيان صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة رئيس الوزراء وصاحب السمو الملكي الأمير سلمان بن حمد آل خليفة ولي العهد، وقد كان البيان واضحا في التأكيد على أهمية استمرار الانفتاح الاقتصادي لضمان جذب الاستثمارات».
وأكد المؤيد أن «ما نقل على لسان سموهما أورث ارتياحاً عاماً بعد حالة من التوجس اعترت القطاع الخاص بسبب بعض الأمور التي صدرت من مجلس النواب»، منبهاً إلى أن «البحرين بلد الحريات منذ القدم».
وشدد المؤيد على أن «حالة الانفتاح هي التي شجعت البنوك على البقاء، وكما لفت البيان فإن الدول الأخرى في المنطقة بكل البنوك والشركات التي يمكن أن تنقل مكاتبها لدول الجوار، وذلك يعني خسارة عشرات الآلاف من الوظائف، وهروب العديد من الاستثمارات». وأكد أن «لا أحد يساوم على إسلامية وعروبة البحرين، فلا يمكن أن نتنازل عن هويتنا – كما أشار البيان – ولكن ليس معنى ذلك أن نفرض على الأجانب رؤى متشددة، وذلك ما لا يقبله البحريني نفسه، فقد نبدأ اليوم بمنع شيء، ثم نمنع.. ونمنع حتى نصل إلى منع تدريس البنات مثلاً، وهذا ما لا يرضاه ولا يقبله البحرينيون».
وأعرب المؤيد عن أمنيته في أن «تكون الرسالة التي جاءت واضحة وصريحة للآخرين»، مؤكداً أن «القطاع الخاص يعمل يداً بيد مع القيادة لما فيه صالح البحرين وبقاء الاستثمارات وزيادة النمو الاقتصادي».
الزين: هل من المعقول هدم المكتسبات؟
ومن جهته، أبدى رجل الأعمال رئيس مجلس ادارة شركة الزين للمجوهرات نبيل الزين تأييده لاستمرار الانفتاح الاقتصادي وارتياحه لتأكيد القيادة على ذلك. وتساءل قائلا: «هل من العقل أن يحقق الإنسان مكتسبات معينة ثم يهدمها بنفسه من دون التروي أو الاحتكام إلى الحكمة؟».
وأكد أن «المكتسبات التي حققتها البحرين حيث أصبحت مركزاً مالياً مهما في المنطقة جاءت بفضل سياسة الانفتاح الاقتصادي، والبحرين – كما نعرف – هي دولة خدمات، فماذا يبقى لنا إذا غيرنا نهج الانفتاح». وقال: «اليوم استقطبنا مصارف وبنوك عالمية، ولدينا عدد كبير من البنوك فالأحرى أن نطور من أنفسنا لكي نستطيع اجتذاب عدد أكبر من المؤسسات المالية لتوظيف وتوليد وظائف لأبناء البلد، وليس أن تشعر الآخرين بأنك تتراجع في حين يتحين جيرانك الفرص لاستقطاب المزيد من الشركات والبنوك».
ورأى أن «الناس أحرار في خياراتهم، فكما أنه ليس لأحد أن يتعرض للمساجد والمآتم والحريات الدينية فليس لأحد أيضاً أن يتدخل في شؤون الناس والأجانب الذين ينتمون لديانات وجنسيات ومذاهب مختلفة ومتعددة». وشدد على أن «من المعيب أن ندعي الديموقراطية ثم نتدخل في حياة الناس».
ولفت إلى أن ما صدر عن صاحبي السمو الملكي أعقب ارتياحاً كبيراً للمستثمرين ورجال الأعمال. وقال: «نشعر عموماً بالبهجة والسرور، فالبحرين بلد خدمات، ومثل هذه الأمور تهدد أرزاقنا وأرزاق أولاد ديرتنا»، موضحاً أن «رسالة القيادة كانت واضحة وعلى السادة النواب أن يعرفوا بأن هناك خطوط حمراء، ومنها: الاقتصاد، والحريات العامة».
فخرو: تحركات النواب أضرت بالاقتصاد
ومن جانبه قال رجل الأعمال رئيس مجلس إدارة شركة تسهيلات البحرين التجارية عبدالرحمن يوسف فخرو بأن «الخبر أورث ارتياحاً عاماً، ومنذ قرأت الخبر في الصباح الباكر استبشرت خيراً»،
ورأى أن «ما بدر من النواب أثر على سمعة البحرين وبالتالي على قدرتها في جذب الاستثمارات، فالميزة النسبية في البحرين تتمثل في الانفتاح والشركات ليست مضطرة للبقاء في البحرين في ظل وجود خيارات أخرى قريبة جداً».
وقال فخرو «نحن نعرف أن الأجانب يزيدون على نصف سكان البحرين وفيهم المسلم والمسيحي والبوذي وغيرهم، ولكل هؤلاء حرياتهم الشخصية، ولدينا ما يزيد على 100 بنك تقليدي، فهل يريد النواب أن يغلقوا البنوك التقليدية أيضا، وذلك يعني تحطيم اقتصاد البلد». وأعرب عن أمنيته في أن تصل الرسالة واضحة جداً للمستثمرين بأن البحرين سائرة على نهج الانفتاح الاقتصادي الذي هو ليس وليد سنة أو سنتين بل هو سمة من سمات البحرين، وأن تسكت هذه الأصوات النشاز.
ومن جانبه قال رجل الأعمال الرئيس التنفيذي لأسواق ميدوي خالد الأمين إن «التجار ورجال الأعمال يشعرون بارتياح بالغ إزاء ما صدر عن صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة رئيس الوزراء وصاحب السمو الملكي الأمير سلمان بن حمد آل خليفة ولي العهد، فالبحرين منذ قديم الزمان بلد الانفتاح والمثابرة، وهي مركز تجاري منفتح منذ أكثر من 300 سنة»، مشيراً إلى أن «ثقافة أهل البحرين والتعليم الذي بدأ فيها مبكراً أسهما في جذب استثمارات عدة على مدى السنين الماضية، والقيادة حريصة على بقاء هذه الاستثمارات واستمرارها بل وجذب المزيد منها».
وشدد الأمين على أن «القيادة أعطت رسالة واضحة للمستثمرين البحرينيين والخليجيين والأجانب بأن نهج الانفتاح الاقتصادي متواصل»، مقدما شكره للقيادة على جهودها وحرصها البالغ على مصلحة البلد وأبنائه.
الفردان: الانفتاح ضرورة
استمرار العملية الاقتصادية
وقال عضو جمعية الإداريين البحرينية الاقتصادي حسن الفردان «إن الرؤية الثاقبة لصاحب السمو الأمير خليفة بن سلمان آل خليفة رئيس الوزراء الموقر وولي العهد نائب القائد الأعلى رئيس مجلس التنمية الاقتصادية صاحب السمو الملكي الأمير سلمان بن حمد آل خليفة التي كانت دائما معززا ومسانداً للتطور الاقتصادي ولمتطلباته الاجتماعية والثقافية والمعيشية إقليميا ودوليا بما يعزز القدرة التنافسية لمملكة البحرين وتحقيق الاستراتيجية الاقتصادية الوطنية 2030 هي في محل إعجاب وتقدير الكثيرين».
وأضاف الفردان: «إنّ التأكيد على جذب رؤوس الأموال وتعزيز البنية الاستثمارية في إطار التغيرات التي يشهدها العالم وتأثيرها بشكل أو بآخر على اقتصادنا من خلال التعامل مع المعطيات الجديدة المتمثلة في العولمة الاقتصادية والاتفاقيات المنظمة للتجارة الخارجية أصبح من الضروري أن تأخذ استراتيجية التنمية الاقتصادية بعين الاعتبار الانفتاح على العالم الخارجي وانتهاج سياسات وأساليب مناسبة تؤدي إلى استمرار العملية الاقتصادية ورفع جودة الإنتاج وتأهيل الكوادر الوطنية وتوفير الاستثمارات اللازمة لتنفيذ مشاريع جديدة لذلك».

توقعــــات بنمو اقتصــادي يصل إلــى %4 هذه السنــة

أطلق مجلس التنمية الاقتصادية وللمرة الأولى تقريراً اقتصادياً يرصد الأداء الاقتصادي لمملكة البحرين ويتضمن تحليلا لهذا الأداء في ظل التطورات الاقتصادية العالمية والتحديات التي تواجه اقتصاد المملكة.
كما يتضمن التقرير مجموعة من المقالات التحليلية عن نمو الإنتاجية في مملكة البحرين، والتغييرات الديموغرافية في البحرين، ومشاركة المرأة البحرينية في القوى العاملة، وهيكلية الإنفاق الحكومي، والتبادل التجاري بين دول مجلس التعاون الخليجي، وأداء مملكة البحرين في أهم المؤشرات والتقارير الدولية لسنة 2009.
وتعليقاً على إصدار هذا التقرير صرح الشيخ محمد بن عيسى آل خليفة الرئيس التنفيذي لمجلس التنمية الاقتصادية قائلا:«يأتي هذا التقرير ليؤكد التزام مجلس التنمية الاقتصادية بمبدأ الشفافية من خلال نقل صورة دقيقة عن الواقع الاقتصادي المحلي وأهم المتغيرات المتعلقة بترتيب مملكة البحرين في المؤشرات الدولية. وأضاف سعادته بالرغم من أن الإحصاءات تشير بأن معدل النمو الاقتصادي لمملكة البحرين لعام 2009 بلغ 3.2% وهو أقل عما كان عليه في سنة 2008 حيث كان 6.3%، إلا أن هذا المعدل يعتبر جيداً فيما لو تمت مقارنته بمعدلات النمو الاقتصادي العالمي».
واعتبر سعادته أن أهمية هذا التقرير الذي أشرفت على إصداره إدارة التخطيط الاقتصادي بالمجلس تكمن في إيجاد قاعدة معلوماتية تستهدف بالرصد والتحليل أهم المتغيرات الاقتصادية التي تواجه مملكة البحرين والسبل الكفيلة للتعامل معها من قبل صنّاع القرار سعياً لبلوغ الطموحات الكبرى التي جاءت على ذكرها الرؤية الاقتصادية لمملكة البحرين 2030.
وبحسب ما لفت إليه التقرير فإنه بالرغم من بداية ظهور الأزمة الاقتصادية في النصف الثاني من سنة 2008 إلا أن البحرين قد شهدت نمواً اقتصادياً، حيث تفيد التوقعات الواردة في التقرير أن معدل النمو الاقتصادي لمملكة البحرين لسنة 2009 قد بلغ 3.2% بالأسعار الثابتة، كما يتوقع أن تصل في 2010 إلى 4%.
وفيما يتعلق بالتضخم الاقتصادي في البحرين، فقد جاء في التقرير الاقتصادي الفصلي لمجلس التنمية الاقتصادية أن معدل التضخم في سنة 2009 لم يتجاوز في نسبته 2%، وسط توقعات أن يبقى معدل التضخم مراوحاً عند تلك النسبة في سنة 2010.
أما فيما يخص توقعات النمو في القطاعات الاقتصادية، فإنه وفقاً للتقرير فمن الأرجح أن يستمر تباطؤ النمو في قطاع التطوير العقاري خلال هذه السنة، في حين أن قطاعات اقتصادية كالخدمات واللوجستيات والتعليم والصحة ستشهد تحسناً إيجابياً في معدلات النمو.
وأشار التقرير كذلك لمعدلات التغير في الإنتاجية، بشقيها المتعلقة بإنتاجية القوى العامة، والإنتاجية متعددة العوامل في البحرين وأسباب التغير فيها.
وعن مشاركة المرأة في القوى العاملة فقد جاء في التقرير الاقتصادي الفصلي أن مشاركة المرأة قليلة جداً مقارنة بمشاركة الرجل في القوى العاملة، حيث إنها وفقا لإحصاءات سنة 2009 فإن نسبة مشاركة المرأة في القوى العاملة قد بلغت 32% في حين أن مشاركة الرجل بلغت 68%. وبينت الإحصاءات أن 44% من النساء البحرينيات العاملات يشغلن وظائفاً في القطاع الحكومي في حين أن 56% منهن يعملن في القطاع الخاص. كما بين التقرير أنه لو شاركت النساء البحرينيات في القوة العاملة بنفس النسبة التي يشارك بها الرجال، ولو تساوت نسبة غير العاملات منهن مع نسبة الرجال، لزادت القوة العاملة بقرابة الثلث. وهذا – بحسب التقرير – يظهر الأثر الكبير الذي يمكن أن يتركه مشاركة النساء في القوة العاملة لو يتم تشجيع المزيد منهن للعمل سواء في القطاع العام أو الخاص. وبحسب الإحصاءات، فإن نسبة النساء الخريجات العاطلات عن العمل يفوق كثيراً نسبة الرجال، ويعزى ذلك إلى أن الإناث يملن إلى تخصصات الدراسات الاجتماعية وقطاع التعليم، وهما قطاعان متشبعان.

Hi all, Now there were lots of changes happen at Bahrain and bahrain's economy. Recently i reviewed video interviews of Ahmed Al khan, heading investment at GBcorp, he mentioned "I think the future in Bahrain and its economy looks very bright. Bahrain is very human centric and so is its economy. It is a country in which people are invested in, families raise their kids not to inherit but to earn and have a career. That is the core infrastructure behind any economy. The real estate sector can boom and bust. Industrial sectors can boom and bust. Every sector of the economy can boom and bust."

$1.2BN STEEL DEAL!

MANAMA: Two of the world's largest engineering consortiums were yesterday awarded contracts to set up a BD452 million ($1.2 billion) steel plant in Bahrain.

The engineering procurement and construction (EPC) contracts were bagged by Kobe Steel of Japan and Midrex of the US, with the latter consisting of three companies - SMS Meer and SMS Concast of Germany and Samsung Engineering of Korea.

The contract signing ceremony was held at the Ritz-Carlton Bahrain Hotel and Spa, in the presence of companies' representatives and US Ambassador Joseph Adam Ereli.

The plant is being set up by the United Steel Company (SULB), a joint venture between Bahrain-based Gulf United Steel Holding Company (Foulath) and Japan's Yamato Kogyo Company.

While Foulath is the Middle East's leading steel investment vehicle and holding company, Yamato is one of the world's leading global beams and structural sections producers.

SULB chairman and managing director Khalid Al Qadeeri said with the awarding of the contracts, the consortiums will build a 1.8m tonnes per annum direct reduction iron (DRI) plant and a 1m tonnes per year melt shop and heavy section rolling mill.

"Kobe Steel and Midrex will undertake the construction of the DRI plant while SMS Meer, SMS Concast and Samsung will jointly develop the other facilities," he said. "We are pleased to have these leading industrial engineering and construction companies on board," he said.

"We are committed to working with world-class partners on this path breaking project, which will see further development of the Middle East's steel industry."

He said with the addition of SULB to Foulath's existing complex, they are also creating the world's first fully-integrated steel production facility with manufacturing capability extending from pelletising to the final product.

"This will in turn allow SULB to be the lowest cost producer of its kind in the world and ensure sustained competitive advantage," he said.

"Once fully operational, SULB is expected to replace approximately 14 per cent of the current imports of medium and heavy beams and structural sections into the Middle East markets.

"SULB will also employ approximately 1,000 people, of which we expect about 70pc will be Bahrainis."

SMS Meer president Dr Joachim Schšnbeck said they are honoured to have been selected by SULB and its shareholders.

"Together with SMS Comcast, we are committed to delivering a benchmark project. With Foulath's existing pelletising plants at its Hidd complex, this will be one of the most efficient production sites in the Middle East region."

SMS Concast president and chief executive officer Jacques Zuber said as the pioneer and leading supplier of continuous casting technology, the company will now have the opportunity to provide its latest melting and casting technology to the project.

Kobe Steel executive officer Shohei Manabe said the company had been previously awarded the contract for the construction of Foulath subsidiary Gulf Industrial Investment Company's (GIIC) No 2 pelletising plant in 2007.

"We are glad our technology will further contribute to the Foulath group's projects."

Midrex Technologies president and chief executive James McClaskey said the project marked a strategic steelmaking project for the Middle East region.

Samsung Engineering president and chief executive Ki-Seok Park said together with SMS, they will prove their commitment to their client by delivering a superior quality project, while forging long-term relationships with their partners.

"Work will commence immediately. It is expected that construction will begin in the second half and that SULB will begin commercial operations and the production of medium and heavy beams and structural sections by the second half of 2012."

The facilities are being established within Foulath's existing 1.3m square meter state-of-the-art steel production complex in Hidd. MANAMA: McLaren Automotive, one of the world's newest sports car manufacturers, will base its regional head office in Bahrain, it was announced yesterday.

This is thanks to Bahrain's excellent business environment, its close proximity to major shareholders and the Formula 1 racetrack, said officials.

Its flagship vehicle, the MP4-12C, will also be launched for the region in Bahrain next year.

The company is part of the McLaren Group, in which the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company has a 42 per cent stake.

Fifty per cent of its automotive arm is also owned by Mumtalakat.

"We will soon start announcing our first dealerships in the region," said McLaren Automotives Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific regional director Ian Gorsuch.

"All distributor-side management, marketing and support functions for the premium high-performance sports car manufacturer will be managed from our new offices."

The British car company was officially launched last month in London.

New Japanese restaurant opens in Bahrain



Maki, one of the finest, fusion Japanese restaurants in the Middle East opened its first restaurant in Bahrain at the Moda Mall.

Maki is known for a wide choice of original Japanese cuisine including delectable Sushi, Sashimi, Tepanyaki, Teriyaki as well as some traditional dishes like Sukiyaki and Yosenabe with Fusion Temaki’s being its signature dish.

Maki has created an extensive array of upscale, authentic ala carte items, to revise the stereotype of Japanese food as being limited to sushi, said a statement.

“We are confident that Moda Mall’s central location in the heart of Manama coupled with a wide variety of delicious Japanese gourmet at Maki will be a unique attraction for shoppers and visitors,” stated Mohammed Al-Raee, Moda Mall’s director of Marketing and PR.
