Marjeyoun/Jdeidet
Marjayoun (Arabic مرجعيون, also Marj 'Ayoun, Marjuyun or Marjeyoun - meaning "meadow of springs") is a Lebanese town and administrative district, Marjeyoun District, in the Nabatieh Governorate in Southern Lebanon. It is located on the west side of the Rift Valley Bank just across from the ancient regional capital, Caesarea Philippi, which was located at the foot of Mt. Hermon on the east side of the Rift Valley. It is not to be confused with the Banias Springs at Caesarea Philippi.
Marjeyoun stands majestically at a hill facing Mount Hermon to the East, Beaufort Castle, the 1000-year old Crusader Castle above the Litani River and overlooking Mount Amel (Jabal Amel) to the West, the summits of Rihan and Niha and the rest of the Mount Lebanon range to the North and the fertile plains of Marjeyoun that extend southward into the Galilee plains and the Golan Heights. Marjayoun is home to the historic Cathedral of Saint Peter. The town of Marjayoun has a mixed population - Greek Orthodox, Maronite and Catholic Christians, as well as Druze and some Muslims. However the majority is Christian, thus Marjayoun is considered by most as a Christian town; most of the villages in the mountains surrounding it are predominantly Muslim. The district of Marjayoun, which covers a greater area than the town, is largely Shi'a Muslim. It recognizes three seats in the Lebanese government, two belonging to Shi'a Muslims and one belonging to Orthodox Christians. ![]() From Marjoun.net ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Looks beautiful!
Also , I have heard of this place before.. but is there some figure that comes from Marjeyoun that is well known?. For some reason I want to say Brigitte Gabriel (the idiot who acts like she knows things)... Does anyone know of any well known figures coming from here?

here is a coupled pulled from wiki:* Dr. Richard Jabara, 1920-1967, founded several hospitals from Tripoli to Saudi Arabia- Philanthropist. * James Jabara, an American pilot and hero of the Korean War, was born to a family of Lebanese Americans originating from Marjayoun. * Michael E. DeBakey, world renowned surgeon, innovator, medical educator, and international medical statesman. * Dr. Walid Gholmieh who is the director of the Le Conservatoire libanais national supérieur de musique was born in Marjeyoun. * Issam Mahfouz, son of the poet Abdul-Massih Mahfouz, was the author of more than 20 books, and a nationally renown playwright. He also wrote for the Al-Nahar News paper. His most famous books included the plays of Al Dictator and AL-Zinzanakht.[3] And for the record, yes Brigitte Gabriel comes from Marjeyoun

wow i kept putting off starting a thread for Jdeidet!! Jader this almost brought tears to my eyes!
i spent many long summer days in this quiet town. My origins are from here. The thing i love about it is that its so quiet and isolated also very beautiful(especially in spring). its like a piece of old lebanon preserved, before big businesses and brand names took over. Ramy; This town is well know for all the people Nadini has mentioned, but unfortunatly it is mostly known because of its complicated role in the civil war and israeli occupation. I don't mean to brag but James Jabara was a relative of mine ![]() thanks for the thread and great pics! |

Thanks for the replies!! And yes alfredosauce, that is where most of my "knowledge" of this place comes from. But, I figure that wherever I did get information regarding marjeyoun and the civil war it is probably biased and not completely factual... so I will regard the place as being fantastic from the pictures, and from the famous persons that have come from it (minus Brigitte lol)

yes unfortunately Bridget Gabriel is from here, don't even get me started on her.. lol
Jader is right, all those stories you here about Marjeyoun from the civil war and stuff its all in the past. we get along with all our neighbours in the south now, and whenever i meet another Jnoubi, in lebanon or in canada, we treat each other like family. Ramy i highly recommend a visit to Marjeyoun. but i must warn you most lebanese i know, will be bored out of their minds there. But if you like nature, like fresh food, and just a quiet place to getaway to for a weekend, then i'm sure you'll love it. once i figure out how to upload photos on here, i'll put some that i took during my last visit in spring 2006! |
