United States of Africa

There are some hints that the next global trend may be the creation of continental federations, and I am interested in any news or opinions you have about this in general. We all know and love the European Union, but in this thread I'm interested to hear about any developments towards other continental federations, in particular the one I have just learned of, the African Union:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_of_Africa

The African Union, consisting of 53 countries, is discussing the idea of forming the United States of Africa; this would be the largest nation on Earth, comprising the entire African continent, and home to more than a billion people. It would also have the 11th largest economy in the world, with a GDP over US $1.5 trillion. Once formed the new country would eventually encourage other nations of the 'African diaspora' to join (ie Carribean nations such as Haiti and Jamaica). I think this would be an amazing thing to happen, and it would go a long way towards reducing conflict and stabilising Africa.

So, tell me what do you think?

If it did happen - I'm sure it would be like the EU not a huge country. (PS this isn't to do with development and therefore should be in Skybar/News)

Indeed second biggest continent - 14% of the world's population and still only 11th.

You mention that this would "stabilise" Africa, but this would never get off the ground to begin with because Africa is too unstable.

There are too many rogue states to attempt to unite, too much power struggle.

Well if that doesn't interest you, how about the Union of South American Nations? With a population of about 390 million and a GDP of about US $4 trillion, its potentially more of a big deal.

don't think that would get off the ground either, at least not as envisaged. Parts of south america hate each other too much.

An african federation would be destined to fail, too many different parties and ideals involved. Case in point, the existing african union - members leaving, or suspended due to political disagreements. About the only thing it can do is better consolidate african political power, which isnt much anyway.

You could create a successful, beneficial 'United States of Africa' as long as only some of the nations of Africa formed a union. Africa is a very diverse continent so a large grouping of nations would be too problematic.

That name is too long winded. How about the United Republics of America? The United Provinces of America (although I prefer that one for Canada)? The Latin States of America?

What about the territories? Shouldn't it be "The United Provinces and Territories of America"?

I think it's a terrible idea. Africa is such an incredibly diverse place, with very different cultures and histories throughout. There have been enough problems between various groups within one nation (i.e. Rwanda, Nigeria, ...) to think that any much larger form of amalgamation would not work out (and could be disastrous).

Um... perhaps they should become provinces. If PEI can be one, so can they.
