Ditto. If Russia wants inspiration for mall design, they need look no further than Poland. Some of their new malls are great. I guess they going for the gaudy circus look? They even called it 'Vegas'. Couldn't a big country with a long rich history like Russia come up with something Russian?

If I ever visit Moscow, I'll be sure to skip this place. GUM, now there's something worth seeing!

I think it's fabulous. This is a mall, not a art museum!

it's disgusting!

really... taking abit of Las Vegas to russia?
all of the kitch elements added together...

Indeed a great example of non-architecture...
People may like this and talk about it :P but not in the Architecture sub-forum :P

Actually it is not built in the style of Vegas and wanted to combine all the styles from different continents. Name of course does not really fit. And in Las Vegas, he does not like.

Way to tacky should a mall be that empty?

Have you seen some of the modern malls in Europe and Asia? They're certainly not art museums, yet are quite beautiful. People in Canada and the United States tend to have very low standards when it comes to mall design because most of us have never been in a good one.

We're certainly not nations any one should be taking cues from when it comes to mall architecture. There's a mall thread on SSC somewhere with examples of gorgeous modern malls. I have an aversion to malls, but found many of those posted in that thread to be a pleasant surprise. I'm used to our north American versions and didn't realize how great a mall could be.

Meh, the reason Americans might not appreciate modern mall design is the fact that we really aren't building them anymore. Have you seen the brand new Crystals mall in Las Vegas? It's actually quite nice. I posted some pictures of it. here's the link: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showpo...1&postcount=40

As to malls in Russia, why shouldn't they have a bit of fun and play with all the architectural signifiers out there? Must everything be pedantic starchitecture?

Canadians don't really build them any more either. That's why our malls look the way they do: they're dated despite renovations.

Pedantic starchitecture? Why bother spending millions of dollars building something you know is sub-standard or crude? The type of fun and play you're alluding to is better left to amusement parks or certain areas of Niagara Falls.

Because doing higher quality design is much more expensive? The malls I've seen with good architectural mojo are VERY expensive to build. Westfield London cost $3 billion!

Where are the slot machines? HOw can they copy Vegas without slot machines. At least put some replica/fake slot machines just for the theme.

You know what, there's no real programmatical difference between shopping districts and shopping malls, but I think I'll just stick to this:
