Buffalo: Court House Update and More

image hosted on flickr

The glass cladding panels, or "windows" as they're sometimes referred to as, are coming along nicely. I'm a little nervous that they seem a lot more "transparent" and a lot less "pretty sapphire blue" than the renderings showed. It's not a big deal for this part of the building, but for the part where the panels are suspended over the concrete it could end up looking kind of ugly. But I'll be patient and wait to see how it turns out.

Poor Statler. I hope somebody comes along with the resources to rescue it.

From the front steps of City Hall.

I've finally figured out that while Buffalo has amazing architecture from nearly every era since it was founded, we don't always do so well with proportion. HSBC Tower is a notable offender, but the Avant is just as bad, and while the new look is light years ahead of how the building looked as the Dulski, the pretty glass panels only emphasize the squat proportions of the building. As with any reflective building, the Avant's appearance changes by the minute, but on a puffy cloud day like today it looks especially nice.

It's a bit more attractive from this side, though the window frame helpfully crops the Avant into a more pleasing, symmetrical shape and hides the horrible bulge on the Delaware Avenue side. Now, I'm not a stickler for symmetry by any means, but I don't like buildings that are almost balanced but not quite.

Thank goodness it's just cloud shadows, not an oil spill. The last couple of months have given me a new appreciation for our beautiful Lake Erie. Also, while I have my issues with the Blue Cross building they get mad props for a clean, attractive roof that keeps the ugly but necessary HVAC etc. out of sight.

Hovering a few thousand miles above the surface of Jupiter. Fooled you! It's really a close up of City Hall up on the observation platform.

Even though I met you only recently I find myself falling in love with you
I don't quite know how to put this decently but what's the chance that you could love me too?
Who has made my dreams come true? And turned my grey skies blue? It's you you you you you

You make me feel like I'm seventeen again, you make everything beautiful seem true
I can't wait to go to sleep and dream again, cause every dream I dream's a dream of dreamy little you
Who has made my dreams come true? And turned my grey skies blue? It's you you you you you
Woo like amorous lovebirds do, who made my world seem new? 'tis you you you you you

You make the world go round
The sun go up and down
The flowers bloom in May
The children laugh and play
Shall we choose a day?
