Ilsvika
Ilsvika is a small bay to the west of the city centre, in which the waterfront development is called.
Most of Ilsvika has been redeveloped just recently since this was a old harbour/industrial area.

Ilsvika continues further to the left of the picture.

The first thing you notice is the three taller residential buildings at Skjærdingen.

Built in the late 1950's, known as Trondheim's first highrises even though they are just 10 floors tall.

Yes they are preserved and will never be removed unless they burn down (as they often do...)!

The newly completed Nordre Avlastningsvei make a short appearance with a roundabout here before it continues in a new tunnel leading to the east of the city.

Ilsvika
Then a small collection of wooden houses in the middel of all this. This is the preserved houses of Ilsvikøra. It might look like a museum, but this is all apartments.

Ilsvika
Then the last part of Ilsvika, and the biggest part. This area have been redeveloped in the last five to ten years. Its mostly apartments,
but they've used some of the old nice industrial buildings as office, and they managed to put up a few small shops along the main street of the area. This last
project of the area is starting construction later this year, called Ilsvika Extra (read about that project here). They also wanted to build a highrise here, but the
developer dropped theplans (rendering of that highrise here).

Nice thread!

I can understand why Trondheim won the miljøpris for 2010 (or 2009?) with the work they done with the streams in the city, looks terrific.

City views
Just some views from the western side of the city. First picture is taken from Utsikten near Sverresborg, the second from Våttakammen.

Munkholmen
In the second picture you see a small island offshore the city. That is Munkholmen, which has served as a place of execution, a monastery,
a fortress, prison, and a World War II anti-aircraft gun station. The current walls and fortress on the island is almost 400 years old.

How come that highrise near Ilsvika Extra was cancelled? By the looks of it,planned location was quite close to those older Ilsvika highrises,so it shouldn't have been too offensive for NIMBY's,right?

Yes, and there was no NIMBY's complaining about it (except a owner of a cabin in half a km away from the highrise who said highrises are ugly and destroy his view). I guess the developers decided that they didn't need that many apartments there.

Cosy, beautiful and perfectly ordered city and a truly great thread - now we have another one thread which is showing the city in all it's areas, big thanks for that, Trondheimer!

I can imagine in winter it all looking at least in the same level of beauty - white and thick snow on the roofs and streets, sun shining on the snow... The perfect town for celebrating Christmas!

Are they burning down accidentally or is burned down by someone with purpose? Here in Latvia, it may happen that owners themselves burns down old valuable wooden buildings, because they want to build something new instead!

Btw, what means the names of city's districts, f.e., Ilsvika? Are they translateable?

That is not the case here, old wooden buildings simply burn extremely well if the fire protection in the building have been too poor.

Some of the names are translatable. Ilsvika to begin with, 'vik' means bay while 'Ils' comes from 'Ila' which is the district Ilsvika is located in (Ila isn't directly transferable as far as i know).

Munkholmen = Munk means monk (obviously) while holm, means islet. So Its transferred into monk's islet.
