FWIW, in response to my own question, it seems Westfield isn't letting on at this stage what is going in that area. The centre maps in the mall currently show each of the redevelopment areas and have a description for each. On level 2 the description is "New Coles Supermarket, Aldi and Fresh Food" (or something like that), on level 3 it is "New Target and fashion mall". For the new area being built down near the lakeside carpark the description is just "New Mini-Major".

I was in the mall today and they've opened up (no access, but you can see it) the new section that runs from where Dymocks used to be to the new bus station on Lathlain st. Looks pretty good. Think the Canberra Centre above Target, and you'll have a pretty good idea.
I also noticed that Coles has a new enterance, further down from the old one, in the new section. I wonder if Woolies will do the same. There are signs saying the new section will open up this month some time.

These are about a week old, but show the progress, bus interchange is open tomorrow. Coles's new entrance looked a lot better, but the old one was pretty average.

Interesting pictures. With the 2nd pic 1 the bus station (the use of interchange has been dropped) is no where near Belconnen Way. With the 3rd that is the Westfield shopping Centre, not the bus station. You need to walk outside to see the bus station!

True, but this is the "waiting lounge" for the station that Westfield have created.

Hadn't been to belco mall in ages but went to the openning of the new section the other night. It looks like it doesn't belong in Belconnen lol. Finally taken a BIG step out of the 1980's.

Without any real time arrivals info the 'lounge' is useless because you cannot see what buses are coming and even if you did you would then have to get out to the stop before they go. |

I think it's brilliant that they've replaced a separated bus way with one set of lights with a series of bus lanes and no less than 10 sets of lights. I literally have walked from the top bus station to the bottom one faster than the bus takes. Sure, it no longer resembles a zombie movie, but it’s a lot slower if Belconnen isn’t your destination.

^ I don't understand how the new path though Belconnen can be called conveniant. The new route along Cohen Street only serves one extra stop that's a short walk away from the Westfeild stop. If they kept the busway and scrapped the Cohen Street stop, six sets of lights would be saved between there and Coulter Drive.
On the far end, the interchange now exits onto Emu Bank rather than Eastern Valley Way, adding another two sets of lights for no extra stops. Why? The Westfield stop is the only change that makes sense IMO. I'm probably being anal.

Westfield have a development application in for a three tower residential development on the lake side of the Belconnen Mall. 23,16 and 12 levels, 319 apartments total. I don't like the podium levels for parking and the buildings are pretty boring, but this development will be fantastic for density if it goes ahead. Belconnen will then have four buildings >20 levels. |
