haha a cheeseball is umm just a cheesy person in general, think along the lines of Peter Andre.....Anyway! enough about cheese!

Edinburgh's skyline may be more beautiful but show me a similar set of pictures in 10 years and the scene wont have changed much if it all, there will be stuff going up down at Leith docks but thats where i see Glasgows strong point, being able to mix the old with the new!

I think Edinburgh's strong point will always be its topography, and the relationship of the buildings to it. There aren't many buildings in Edinburgh that are actually that noteworthy, but the overall effect is stunning.

Id agree with that maccoinnich, Edinbirgh looks fantastic when driving North from Newcastle up the coast road, near some winfarm the view opens out and the combination of the castle, Arthurs couch or whatever its called and those spires is magnificent

The same can be said of the view of Glasgow coming down the hill into the city on the M77. I always love that trip, especially on a sunny day with all in view

I wouldn't really agree, Vlad. Now, Glasgow's topography does it give a certain amount of drama - looking at a streemap, with the gridiron plan, you'd never guess the changes in level that occur even between two streets. This certainly does make some very nice vistas at certain points, and on a micro scale has been used to very good examples by certain architects (the Glasgow school of Art wouldn't be half as good if it was on a flat site), but on the macro scale it's not noticeable. From Cathkin braes it does take a minute or so to work out exactly where the city centre is, but from Fife you can always make out where certain parts of Edinburgh are.

Now, at street level, if you look at each individual building, there are many more buildings, of many different eras, to get excited at in Glasgow.

Oh yeah, and, very bad news:

Quote:
Pub plan unveiled as historic city cinema is put up for sale

JANE BRADLEY

PLANS to convert Edinburgh's oldest cinema auditorium into a pub have been drafted after it emerged the Cameo cinema is up for sale.

The historic venue is set to have more than half its seats ripped out so a bar can be installed in a multi-million pound deal.

The Tollcross cinema is being sold by owner City Screen to an unknown buyer.

Plans to remove the cinema's main auditorium and turn it into a bar have been lodged with Edinburgh City Council.

However films will continue to shown at the venue.

Under the proposals the two smaller screens would remain in place and the existing bar would be turned into a 31-seat third auditorium.

It is believed Stefan King, the entrepreneur who runs the Grosvenor cinema in Glasgow, has been in talks over the future of the Cameo. Mr King, whose conversion of the Glasgow cinema caused uproar when he downsized it to make way for a large bar, is also believed to be in negotiations to buy Bennets Bar, Auld Toll Bar and the Kings Arms near the Cameo.

The Cameo, which was built in 1914, has been run as an arthouse cinema since 1949, when it was bought by Jim Poole - who sold it in the early 1980s. Mr Poole's daughter, Genni Poole, said: "I am absolutely appalled, particularly as the intention seems to be to make it into a glorified bar.

"I've seen the plans and I don't think the local residents are going to be very happy about a new large bar in their midst, which is not needed in the Tollcross area."

She added: "We do not need another bar in Edinburgh. It's just ridiculous that they want to turn a beautiful cinema, which offers something different, into a bar."

Ginnie Atkinson, managing director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, said: "The Cameo has a huge heritage in the cinema community in Edinburgh.

"I am glad it is not closing. I think what is going to happen is it is going to become a slightly different type of cinema experience."

A spokesman for the Cameo said the cinema was in talks with potential buyers.

He said: "These dealings are being conducted solely between the senior staff of City Screen and potential buyers.

"A final agreement of sale is likely to be completed before the end of the year.

"I have been informed that any condition of sale will not include a safeguard over the continued use of the main auditorium."

He added: "The designated usage of the new building will be entirely down to the choices of the new owners.

"Planning permission to greatly alter the internal aspects of the building has been lodged with the council. These plans are open to inspection from the public."

The cinema, which has been described by author Quentin Tarantino as his favourite cinema anywhere in the world, opened Pulp Fiction, starring John Travolta and Bruce Willis, as the showpiece of the 1994 Edinburgh International Film Festival.

I was thinking more of the view of the entire city rather than the city centre itself. To see all the way to the other side is very impressive, and the city centre is clear as more high rises clustered together.

Personally, I really don't think that there is much to get excited about in viewing Glasgow from afar... in fact, I think the place looks like a complete dump. To compare it to the magnificent Edinburgh skyline, which is IMHO one of the very finest on the planet is laughable.
Glasgow's architectural gems are to be found on far closer inspection and not obscured by dozens of dull, concrete lumps.

Skye (running for the hills!)

oh, I agree. 'IMHO' Edinburgh Castle, just for example, is quite an ugly stone lump though. What can you actually see of Edinburgh from 'afar' anyway, nothing, its all too small to notice. I would never trade Glasgow for Edinburgh any time. Bring on the concrete lumps

When you think about it the only reason Edinburgh DOESNT look like

a complete dump.
is that they managed to hide away reality so the Southern tourists wouldnt be to offended and actually imagine the place was a real city with real people. Glasgows poor side is in your face. Thats where it deserves to be.

Sorry Vlad, you are absoloutly right. I have never been able to grasp exactly why all these millions of tourists flock to the capital every year gawping at that "ugly stone lump" above Princess street... Personally I like to holiday in the Eastern block, ahh, the concrete there is just stunning....

I'm not attempting to turn this into another monotonous Edinburgh v Glasgow debate. There are things about both cities that I both love and hate but I don't think Glasgow's topography is in any way remarkable. Sorry if my honesty seems a touch brutal...
Perhaps I need to pick up a pair of these rose tinted specs that certain forumers seem to be sporting these days!
