Lawmaker dared to sue ex-mayor
Friday, August 13, 2010

OZAMIZ CITY -- A daughter of an alleged "political protector" of a crime syndicate challenged Misamis Occidental Representative Loreto Leo Ocampos to file criminal charges against her father.

Ocampos, early this week, accused this city's former mayor Reynaldo Parojinog Sr. of offering "political protection" to the Kuratong Baleleng syndicate while he was still mayor, hence the supposed impunity the group enjoyed.

But incumbent Mayor Nova Parojinog-Echavez, who took over the mayoralty from Parojinog, said her father deserves the appropriate forum to clear his name of such accusations.

"He (Ocampos) should bring this matter before the bar of justice and not the bar of public opinion because this is a law enforcement question," Echavez said.

Parojinog was city mayor from 2001 to 2010. He ran against Ocampos for a congressional seat of Misamis Occidental's second legislative district in last May 10 polls.

During the same period, Ocampos was governor of Misamis Occidental. Both are avid supporters of then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Echavez said she is taking the cudgels for her hypertensive father who has been advised not to engage in a "media duel" even during the electoral campaign.

She said she is saddened that by being named as "protector" of a crime syndicate, her father "becomes an open target for public deprecation and even armed reprisal."

"I don't think this is the kind of justice that Representative Ocampos would like to see," Echavez said.

Over local radio, she said she welcomed the creation of a task force to go after private armed groups in the city and the rest of Misamis Occidental as "a step towards further promoting peace and order."

Sources from the police said at least half of the task force's support elements arrived since Thursday night.

On Friday morning, security officials gathered with local government officials in the province during the provincial peace and order council meeting.

In a press statement distributed to journalists, Echavez appealed, especially to both Ocampos and losing mayoral bet Constancia Lim, to "bring the Kuratong Baleleng issue to the appropriate forum" and with "the proper context."

She particularly asked Lim to discuss about her supposed evidence of poll machinations and terrorism allegedly undertaken by the Kuratong Baleleng during the May 10 polls before the Commission on Elections (Comelec) "because these are part of her arguments to nullify my proclamation as mayor."

"In essence, Attorney Lim points to the Kuratong Baleleng as responsible for terrorizing the voters of Ozamiz City during the May 10 political exercise which led to her defeat and hence my victory," noted Echavez, who won by over 7,000 votes against Lim.

She said she would not comment on the assertion until the electoral protest is dispensed with by the Comelec.

"By dragging the name of Kuratong Baleleng to her solely partisan complaint, Attorney Lim, aided by Representative Ocampos, successfully created a sensation," she said. "But the public deserves more than this. The public deserves to know a categorical answer whether her allegations against my victory are true or untrue."

Addressing both Ocampos and Lim, Echavez appealed: "The time for mudslinging and partisan-based discourse and political wrangling is over. Let us allow ourselves to focus on fulfilling our respective mandates... (of) making government matter to the aspirations of the ordinary people."
