Wow the collection of photos on that site are absolutely fantastic. I especially like the ones of the ship titled on it's side and Blackpool Pier.

Hopefully this is the best thread for the query.

When taking architectural photos - how do you get your photos to look more right than wrong in this example? (The other rights and wrongs are worth a look through too.)

Thinking about perspective, is it best to be aligned parallel with the midpoint of the building? (Obviously there's no chance of that happening in crowded cities at certain angles).

You need the film or sensor of the camera to be as parallel with the vertical of the building as you can, so with a perfectly vertical building, if you hold the camera perfectly horizontal you shouldn't see a convergence of the buildings vertical lines, so yeah half way up the building would help. At the bottom holding the camera horizontal you'll probably lop the top off picture, as you'll be pointing the camera at the bottom of the building. Heres a few ways of getting around that:-
  • get further away from the building
  • get an expensive tilt-shift lens
  • just take a photo and use software, like photoshop, to correct the perspective later. In photoshop you can either edit->transform->skew, and then stretch the top of the image on both sides so that you have a trapezium, or use the lens correction filter in the filters->distort menu, or use the trapezium lens correction filter in Adobe Camera Raw

this website gives you an idea of what to do with the software method. You'll lose detail by doing this.

If you like panoramas you'll love this:

http://luminous-newyork.com/
There's also a link to the photographer's blog explaining how he does panoramas...
