Post Korean technology to enhance weather forecasts

Korean technology to enhance weather forecasts

The Government of the Republic of Korea recently announced the 'Development of COMS (Communications, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite) Data Receiving/Analysis System in Sri Lanka' as part of the East Asia Climate Partnership.

The project will be carried out by Korea's grant aid organizations, Korea International Co-operation Agency, KOICA and technically supported by Korea Meterological Administration (KMA).

KOICA signed a Record of Discussions with the Disaster Management Ministry on October 21.

The planned project aims to assist in building Sri Lanka's meteorological monitoring and forecast infrastructure, enhance workforce capacity in the related fields ultimately minimizing the damage caused by weather related natural disasters.

By increasing forecast technology, loss of life and property in areas ravished by natural disasters every year will decline while quality of life for those most vulnerable to climate disasters is expected to increase.

The project will develop a COMS Data Receiving/Analysis System tailored to the needs of Sri Lanka. The data will be transmitted from the Korean COMS, which is operated by KMA, launched this past June.

Along with the data receiving and analysis system, KOICA will also provide the equipment and workforce training necessary for the successful and effective utilization of the system.

Productivity in the aviation industry, agriculture and fishing industries is expected to increase as they benefit from accurate meteorological data. Moreover, the project is anticipated to contribute to poverty alleviation as damage and loss from natural disasters is abated.

In addition to the COMS project, KOICA and the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority will begin installation of a 500 KW scale grid-connected solar power plant in Hambantota Baruthankanda to resolve electricity supply issues.

The East Asia Climate Partnership is a development program designed to enhance partner countries' climate change adaptation capacity and promote sustainable development in East Asia.

KOICA has been in-charge of implementing the five-year (2008-2012), US $200 million co-operation initiative fund since 2009.

Post Tuticorin-Colombo ferry service soon

Tuticorin-Colombo ferry service soon

The ferry service between Tuticorin and Colombo is expected to resume. Additional infrastructure facilities will be created at the Tuticorin port in India.

The work would be taken up in the first week of November and completed in a month, Tuticorin Port Trust Deputy Chairman A. Subbiah told The Hindu.

Amenities were put in place at the Port Trust during 2003-04 to facilitate passenger traffic but the decision on resumption of ferry service was put on hold due to security threats, he said.

The passenger terminal would increased surveillance under Central Industrial Security Force such as establishing a passport reader, scanner, exclusive counters for customs and immigration facilities, cabins for officials, child care centre, cafeteria and a helpline.

A series of consultative meetings had been conducted with officials of Customs, Immigration and Port Health to ensure preparedness, Subbiah said. In a statement issued Wednesday, Indian Union Minister for Shipping G K Vasan said a high-level delegation headed by the Secretary (Shipping) visited Colombo on October 14 and 15 and held discussion with Sri Lankan Government officials.

He said that the delegation had discussed with its counterparts, Ports and Aviation Minister and finalized details of the Memorandum of Understanding to be signed between the two countries. All efforts were being made to begin the ferry service at the earliest, the Hindu reported.
