Sesquicentennial Bridge - A stunning structure in Teresina, Brazil
Teresina is a city situated in the Brazilian Northeast, with a population of 800,000 (the Greater Teresina Urban Area has an estimated population of 1,130,000). In 2002, during the festivities of the City Sesquicentennial, the local government started the construction of a cable-stayed bridge over Poty River, one of the two rivers crossing the city. It was named after João Isidoro França, the portuguese who made the design of the streets of Teresina, the first Brazilian State Capital specifically constructed to replace another one, the municipality of Oeiras, in 1852 (decades before Belo Horizonte and Goiânia and almost one century before the construction of Brasília). Teresina is the youngest Capital City in the Brazilian Northeast (Recife and Salvador, for example, are more than 400-year-old) and is currently a thriving cultural, commercial and services center in the center of this region.
The bridge took almost eight years to be inaugurated (two days ago, at last). Projected by Catão Francisco Ribeiro and built in prestressed concrete, it spans 363 mts and has six lanes for cars (three on each side, each one with 2,10 mts) in addition to a cycleway and a passage for pedestrians on each side (2,15 mts each). It has a single tower, with 95 mts high, holding an observation deck on its top with 125 square meters, reached through two panoramic elevators. The cables have a harp design, with one pillar located on the right banks of the river (the tower itself) and other four on the left side; there are no pillars within the river bed. Right, yang... its a new feature never explored in other brigdes. The observatory point is reached by two panoramic elevators whose entrance is below the bridge.
Rumors say that the population will pay R$10,00 to access the dock of observation, it's close to an expansive price to the mass of population (it's about U$ 5,67). |

i like the idea of an observatory on top of a bridge... '2 birds with one stone'... though it could have been made a bit higher. Nice images |

marki, this is the tallest structure in town so far, so that one can see almost the whole city from the 180° observation deck, even with tall condos within close range. In addition, there are restrictions because of the airport, situated only 5 km away.It is beautiful, indeed.

The price is not too high, but enough to recoup money to take proper care of the observation point and avoid it being a meeting point for roaming teenagers with nothing else to do.

Quite right, Suburbanist. A pity we live in Brazil, though. The observation deck is not open to general public yet.
