Engineering An Empire - The Persians
Engineering An Empire: The Persians
12/3/06 - History Channel Show Run Time: 60 minutes The Persian Empire was one of the most mysterious civilizations in the ancient world. Persia became an empire under the Cyrus the Great, who created a policy of religious and cultural tolerance that became the hallmark of Persian rule. Engineering feats include an innovative system of water management; a cross-continent paved roadway stretching 1500 miles; a canal linking the Nile to the Red Sea; and the creation of one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Mausoleum of Maussollos. The rivalry between Persia and Athens led to a 30-year war known as the Persian Wars, the outcome of which helped create the world we live in today. Peter Weller hosts. Don't miss it... Yeah I already seen them...
In the first one the guy claims Persepolis was built by the order of Cyrus the Great which is not right... Cyrus ordered the construction of Pasargardae City but Darius the Great ordered the construction of Persepolis Anyway, thanks for opening the thread gilgi

Thanks for the info, Gilgamesh. This looks most promising. I have been researching the water management system and the cross-continent paved roadway these past few weeks but haven't found the answers to all my questions yet. I hope they have something to say about waste water management.
I won't be able to watch unitl I get home from work tonight but I did find the link to the first part of the show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKN-gZuSH2o. Marcia |

I finally got around to seeing Engineering an Empire. I found it interesting, although I didn't care for Peter Wellers style. He sounds like a sportscaster.
One thing that caught my attention was the visual portrayal of Xerxes. ![]() I've wondered what those stylized haircuts in the reliefs and the statues really looked like. It may have been something like the way the actor is wearing his hair - long but coiled and plaited around his head to form that bulge in the back. They should have given him a long beard, though.
