Actually Fresno hasn't decayed other than its downtown being left to only the workers, and shoppers have gone elsewhere. The city has actually grown quite rapidly. Sadly instead of focusing on central fresno, they have continued to expand north. Almost everything there is to do in Fresno, shop, movies, trendy restaurants, beautiful parks (Woodward Park) etc are all on the north side. The bright spots that are in central Fresno would be the Tower District, Old Fig Garden, and although not really central Fresno, but new Fig Garden. The Tower District is probably the most urban residental neighborhood in the city. Its hands down the most walkable of all city hoods, and attracts the young hipsters, college kids, bohemian types, and gays. Also there are some really nice older, and well kept neighborhoods near the city college. Then there is Old Fig Garden, which is very beautiful, and lots of greenery. Although its not urban, its certainly is a well to do community thats not part of the newer trendy northside with its own snotty shopping and dinning. Fresno also has another well to do new Fig Garden, and both Gardens are pretty much where the money is. None of these areas were covered in this photo thread. But the best way I could describe it would be it looks like many wealthy/upscale suburban communities I've seen in out on Long Island, NY. The city isn't an industrial city, so you won't find the grit associated with that kind of city. Its mostly geared towards agriculture, goverment (IRS, Fresno County), college (Cal State Fresno), and some Technology. Although small, the city has a nice modern airport as well. Anyway I hope this helps. I lived in Fresno for 5 years, and eventually moved back to L.A. Believe me I hated the slow place of Fresno at first. After growing up in L.A, and moving to Fresno from Chicago, it was surely like adjusting from being on a fast moving freeway, to driving on a slower pace surface street. fter a while as with most other transplants I've met from places like New York City (believe it or not), S.F Bay area, and LA. They all gave the advice its not a bad place once you get established, and they all loved living there. Personally I can't say I loved it completly since I was one who like mega cities, and living near the ocean. Yet I enjoyed my time there, and I wouldn't have a heart attack if I had to live there again. My only problem would be the hot summers, but its tollerable and not as bad as the hot and humid southern U.S. Nor is it as bad as Vegas, or Phonix, and there are four seasons. Winter is the best to me, but it can be hard on some since the fog in the valley can really bad, and perhaps you may only briefly see the sun a few times in a month. cool photos. I have spent a lot of time in Fresno. Downtown has potential but is unlikely to redevelop any time soon. Tower District is closest to a vibrant urban area. There is also old town Clovis and some new developments planed in SE Fresno called Fancher Creek.
