EasyJet launches longest-ever route - to Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — Jordan's tourist minister has welcomed budget airline EasyJet's new low fare route to the capital Amman, saying it will boost the country's tourism industry.

Minister Zeid Qsous called the start of regular EasyJet flights on March 27 "good news" because the company was a leading European carrier.

The British-based airline announced its first route to Jordan as the country signed its Open Skies agreement with the European Union.

EasyJet said flights went on sale Thursday. It expected to fly three times a week from London Gatwick to Amman with a return ticket priced at $166, or 106 British Pounds, tax inclusive.

The fare is around 25 percent of the rates offered by other airlines.

New Easyjet route to Amman

New Easyjet route to Amman - Jordan Tourism Board comment

Saturday 18, December 2010

Easyjet’s Amman flight should lead to a higher proportion of the overall holiday spend being left in Jordan, due to less budget being allocated to travel.

“We have been discussing direct flight options to Jordan with Easyjet for a number of years now and are delighted with the news of the launch of this new route to Amman and offer our full support to the airline. With hugely competitive lead in rates from only £106.00 per person, the low cost carrier will make travel to Jordan more affordable for all and will particularly benefit families who up until now were subject to more rigid pricing structures of scheduled airlines. The new route will open up the options for those who are happy to travel independently or semi-independently, utilising the services of a Jordan inbound operator or booking direct with hotels. The increased frequency, capacity and more flexible pricing is great news for tourism to Jordan and should work to increase awareness of the destination as well as grow the independent traveller market, which already makes up approximately 50% of UK visitors.”

- David Symes, Jordan Tourism Board Country Manager for UK and Ireland

How else will Jordan benefit from the new route?

* Easyjet’s Amman flight should lead to a higher proportion of the overall holiday spend being left in Jordan, due to less budget being allocated to travel and could therefore lead to any of the following trends:

Increased time spent in the destination
Upgraded hotel accommodation
Increased family bookings
Increased independent travel to Jordan

* More affordable option for families. By choosing the right booking and travel periods, a family of four can now fly direct to Amman for little more than the cost of one ticket on a scheduled carrier.
* In addition to independent travellers and families, the new route will make Jordan more affordable for church and school groups who will happily book many months in advance but who generally use a UK tour operator.
* Some operators will also utilise no-frills flight options to Jordan in order to offer more competitive packages.

What makes Jordan an ideal destination for the independent traveller?

* A large proportion of the population speaks English.
* The country is compact and very easily navigable if self-driving.
* Jordan offers a wide range of accommodation options; from 5 star hotels to small family run properties and guesthouses or camps and lodges in nature reserves.
* Ideal for families – Jordan is a very safe and child-friendly nation with plenty of attractions and activities for kids.

That's great news! Thanks for posting Amman 12! I was in London in October and my round trip RJ ticket cost me an arm and a leg!

Well, finally tried Easy Jet in February for a meeting in London. Considering the luggage and distance from the heart of London, you will save about 40% compared to a ticket on RJ. However, the fact that it is a 5+ hour flight made it feel like a flying coffin and I felt like suffocating! Crew was friendly and professional. But hey, I would pay the extra $ to fly on RJ with ample space, food, entertainment and right into Heathrow and not Gatwick in the middle of nowhere! If it was a one hour flight or so, yes, low cost is the way to do it but more than that is really torture.
