Tata Steel felicitates archers, Deepika gets Rs.10 lakh

Ranchi, Oct 18 (IANS) India's medal-winning archers at the Commonwealth Games were accorded a warm welcome on their arrival here and felicitated by Tata Steel Monday.

Double gold medallist Deepika Kumari was given a cash award of Rs.10 lakh while Rahul Banerjee, who won a gold and bronze each, was given Rs.6 lakh. Jayant Talukdar, who won two bronze medals, got Rs.2 lakh. Coaches Dharmendra Tiwari, Purnima Mahato and Satnam Singh were also given Rs.1 lakh each.

An excited Deepika said: 'It is a great feeling to be rewarded in one's own academy. I am feeling great today. There is lots of talent in Jharkhand which needs to be promoted.

'In our country cricket is given too much importance and other games also need to be promoted.'

Deepika, daughter of an auto rickshaw driver, joined the Tata Archery Academy in 2008 and shot to prominence after winning two gold medals in the Commonwealth Games in Delhi.

The Jharkhand government has also announced a reward of Rs.10 lakh to Deepika.

CWG: Rajasthan Govt Rewards Poonia with Rs 15 Lakh

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot today felicitated Krishna Poonia for making India proud by winning the gold in discus throwing at the Commonwealth Games, won by an Indian in athletics after 52 years.

Apart from the cash reward, Gehlot also announced other rewards for Poonia from the state government - posting as Deputy SP in Rajasthan Police Service, allotment of free MIG 'B' house and Rs 5 lakh additional amount for preparation for the 2012 Olympics to be held in London.

Her husband and coach Virendra Poonia has also been awarded Rs 7.5 lakh in cash.

The couple will be able to travel for free in Rajasthan Roadways buses, Gehlot announced at a function organised to honour the Jaipur girl who won the CWG gold in discus throwing on Monday.

The state government had earlier announced free allotment of 25 bigha land in IGNP region to players from the state who would win medals in Olympics, Asian Games and CWG games and allotment of 25 bigha of land on reserve price for those athletes who would represent the state in these games.

RCA announces cash award for Krishna Poonia

New Delhi, Oct 13 (PTI) Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA) will give an award of Rs 5 lakh in cash to discus thrower Krishna Poonia for winning a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. An announcement in this regard was made by RCA president and Union Minister for Rural Development C P Joshi after Poonia met him here at his office. "The achievement of Krishna Poonia is inspiring to all Indian players. Rajasthan Cricket Association has decided to give her an award of Rs 5 lakh in cash for her outstanding performance in the CWG games," Joshi said. The cash award will be given to Poonia at a programme to be organised in her honour in Jaipur on December 6, he added. Expressing her gratitude to Joshi, Poonia said, "My dream has come true because of the support and blessings of the people of the country. The moment of my victory was amazing to me." She also gave the credit of her victory to her husband and coach Virendra Singh Poonia. Poonia, a resident of Gagarvaas village of Churu district in Rajasthan, gave the country its second gold medal 52 years after Milkha Singh won the yellow metal for India.PTI PKU SHN

They can own businesses, but they should not aquire stakes as a bribe.

In maharashtra sharad pawar holds stake in almost every winery or sugar mill. He also has stakes in real estate firms. how? He asks for share of those companies in lieu of giving them license.

Kalmadi is making sports his family business. This needs to be investigated from where has the money come that was invested in JPSK. I am sure he is clever enough to have taken right steps. He must have bought that share at a giveaway price when JPSK was nothing but an idea. that big chunk of ownership has been given to him as a bribe so that he does not create any political obstacles in the project.

This kind of corruption is hard to prove, since he can even prove that he bought the stake. Howsoever cheap he bought, thats not a crime.

I remember how someone in the international section (GetSmart? Cyborg?, i.e. the usual crew) posted an article that said that there would be a huge negative economic impact on India and that MNCs would be hesitant to do business here. What ever happened to that?

Anyways, in the end, I think I'm happy that the CWG happened. Now we have all this nice sporting infrastructure to work off on.
