Campeau was going to look like the American International building in New York but taller and no spire. 80's was such an amazing era in skyscrapers.....

I realize this in reference of an old post from September of last year, but the US Bank building in L.A. wasn't designed by Pei, but by the architectural firm that he created.

I've got to speak up in defense of the KPF version. The picture above just doesn't do it justice. I've seen a large street-level rendering in a book from the 1980s and I think it's a spectacular tower...far more dignified and refined than the Jahn version. In fact, together with Foster's Tokyo Millenium Tower, it's my favorite unbuilt skyscraper.

I dunno. I'm a huge fan of postmodern architecture from the 80's but this is just ugly.

Btw..Helmut Jahn designed 7 proposals for the Bank of the Southwest.

i know that spot. it even feels like a weird spot for a surface level lot because everything around it is anywhere from 30 - 70 stories tall. But chances are that it is going to remain a lot for a while too because no one has any intention of building on that side of downtown.

Some of those designs still look fresh. Houston just needs to grow some big local banks to help fill in those lots. If the big Wall St. banks had their way, they'd replace 70 story tower offices with Fotomat booths!
