Two large parks to be set up in Muqablain, Marka

AMMAN (JT) - Amman Mayor Omar Maani on Monday announced that the Greater Amman Municipality (GAM) will construct two large parks in Muqablain and Marka in addition to a complex for government agencies in Abdoun.

The 530-dunum Muqablain park will be similar to King Hussein Park in west Amman, Maani told reporters at a press conference held yesterday to announce the projects.

“This new site will include sports fields, an information technology centre and a social services centre in addition to pedestrian paths and restaurants,” he added.

The project will serve Muqablain residents as well as inhabitants of the surrounding area, Maani noted.

The first phase of the project will be ready by mid-2009, with the rest scheduled for completion in 2011.

He added that the 450-dunum Marka park will be located close to Hizam Street.

With the capital’s rising population, the city needs more open areas like the King Abdullah and King Hussein parks, Maani told reporters during yesterday’s press conference.

Meanwhile, the proposed complex, which will gather government agencies in one facility, will be built on Abu Bakir Street, located between the Badr and Zahran areas, Maani said.

The location, which links the Western side of the capital with eastern districts, as well as the north with the south, is also close to public transportation services, according to the mayor.

In addition, it is adjacent to the areas that have been designated for the construction of high rises.

Under the Amman Master Plan, GAM designated four areas within the capital for towers, among them Abdoun.

The complex will be designed in accordance with Amman’s architectural traditions, and built by the Ministry of Public Works and Housing, Maani said.

Also yesterday, the mayor visited Yarmouk District and met with local residents. In addition, he toured the parallel market in Wihdat and held talks with members of the Wihdat refugee camp committee, who called for cleaning up the camp’s entrance by removing kiosks to alternative locations.
