Korean Air Q4 profit misses f'cast, eyes strong 2011

SEOUL, Jan 27 - Korean Air Lines Co Ltd <003490.KS>, the world's top freight carrier among commercial airlines, posted a smaller-than-expected operating profit on Thursday amid heightened geopolitical risks and higher fuel costs but set a strong full-year target on expected growth in demand.

South Korea's No.1 airline is expected to see an improvement in profits this year on upbeat prospects for passenger and cargo traffic.

The company earned an operating profit of 189 billion won in the quarter ended December, missing a 253 billion won consensus forecast from Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S.

The company made an operating profit of 154 billion won in the year-ago quarter.

The SmartEstimate for operating profit from StarMine, which rates analysts based on past accuracy and timeliness, was 221 billion won.

North Korea's Nov. 23 artillery attack on a South Korean island, which raised tensions on the peninsula to their highest levels since the 1950-53 Korean War, hurt travel, analysts said. Higher oil prices also drove up fuel costs for the airline.

The two Koreas are now trying to calm tensions via dialogue.

The South Korean flag carrier said it expects total 2011 revenues and operating profit to exceed 2010 on continuing growth in both passenger and cargo demand, while expanding its fleet.

Korean Air will receive delivery of five Airbus A380 superjumbos this year, with the first flight planned for June.

The company set a 2011 target of a 14 percent jump in operating profit to 1.3 trillion won versus a year ago.

Also, it aims for a 9 percent increase in sales to 12.5 trillion won this year, the airline added.

Korean Air: To Start Receiving B787-9s From Boeing From 2016

SEOUL -(Dow Jones)- Korean Air Lines Co. (003490.SE) on Friday said it has revised its order for Boeing Co's (BA) 787 Dreamliner aircraft and that it would start receiving the new planes from 2016.

Korean Air revised the contract so that it would receive 10 B787-9s as opposed to 10 B787-8s as originally agreed upon in 2005, the company said in a regulatory filing. The airline was supposed to start receiving the Dreamliners this year.

The disclosure comes after Boeing said last week that it the Korean airline may not be able to get its first Dreamliner this year. The firm said at the time that no decision has been made about the delivery schedule for Korean Air.

Separately, the airline said it has placed a $640 million order to acquire two B747-8F aircraft, which are for shipping cargo.

Korean Air completes fleet enhancement

Korean Air announced it has finally completed a six-year long retrofitting project aimed at enhancing cabin features and seats on most of its passenger aircraft.

Out of the carrier’s fleet of 68 aircraft, 49 aircraft, comprised of a mixture of Boeing B777s, B747s and Airbus A330s, have all been enhanced. The remaining 19 aircraft are new.

The project replaced more than 14,000 seats with new products such as the Kosmo Suites, Kosmo Sleepers and Sleeper seats in first class, Prestige Sleepers and Prestige Plus in Prestige class (business) and new economy seats in economy class, and has introduced the upgraded AVOD inflight entertainment system.

During the first phase, between 2005 and 2008, 17 B747s were refurbished. Then, between 2009 and 2011, 13 B777s and 19 A330s were improved.

Now, the carrier has a total of 17 refurbished B747-400s, 18 B777-200ERs nine of which are new and nine that have been refurbished, 10 B777-300ERs out of which six are new and four have been refurbished, 16 refurbished A330-300s and seven A330-200s, four of which are new and three have been enhanced.

At the end of May, the carrier is also scheduled to receive an A380, the first out of a total of 10. By year end, the carrier will have taken delivery of four more superjumbos, with the remaining five to arrive throughout 2014.

First Korean Air A380 for the start of a final phase of flight and ground tests

The first Korean Air A380 took to the skies today for the start of a final phase of flight and ground tests at Airbus facilities in Hamburg, Germany, where the aircraft has undergone painting and full cabin furnishing. Plans call for Airbus personnel to test all cabin systems, including air flow and air conditioning, lighting, galleys, lavatories, seats and in-flight entertainment, during the upcoming program of flights. Airbus also plans to undertake advanced general performance tests with the aircraft before it flies to Toulouse for preparation for delivery to the airline.

Korean Air expects to become the sixth operator of the A380 when it begins flying the aircraft in June. The carrier plans to initially operate the A380 from Seoul to destinations in Asia, followed by non-stop long-haul services to North America and Europe. Korean Air has placed firm orders for 10 A380s.

SEOUL, May 13, 2011 (The Korea Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Korean Air, South Korea's No. 1 air carrier, has said that it will recruit an additional 500 flight attendants this month.

The recruitment, which is on the largest scale ever, comes shortly after the company hired a total of 500 employees in February and March, company officials said.

The air carrier also said that it will hire another group of 500 in the latter half of this year, which means 1,500 flight attendants will be employed in 2011. About 1,150 were recruited last year.

The move takes place as Korean Air plans on introducing 16 new aircrafts this year, including five A380s which will be flying here beginning in June.

Applicants will be accepted at the company's website (recruit.koreanair.com) until May 19 and applications for those with experience will be taken from May 20-30.

Currently, Korean Air has 106 aircraft and 5,750 male and female flight attendants.

Korean Air to Introduce the Second Airbus A380

Korean Air’s second A380 aircraft is ready for long-haul flights.

Korean Air’s second A380 made its first appearance at the Paris Air Show which took place between June20-26, thrilling audiences.

With the introduction of the new aircraft, the airline will expand its A380 route service to New York.

Starting from 8 August, Korean Air will operate three flights a week to Seoul/Incheon-New York route for a month and from September increase its frequency to 7 flights a week. In August, operating every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, the flight will depart Seoul/Incheon at 11:00 and arrive in New York at 11:55 the same day.
