Germany has got it all!
From the Metropolis feel to the pure and fantastical stuff that fairy tales are made of.
Impressive country to say the least!

Germany is beautiful. Somehow I have always had the impression that France was supposed to be the most picturesque country in Europe. This thread has certainly disabused me of that notion.

Weingarten (Baden-Württembert): Kloster und Basilika St. Martin

Germany's "Escorial", besides Ottobeuren the biggest monastery of this country, a former Benedictine abbey, now a teacher training college. The demolition of the Romanesque church began 1715 to build the Baroque minster, which exists until today (1715-24 by the architect Franz Beer).

This was planned

engraving from 1723 http://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?...20050501210002

It could be realized only in parts, so the late Gothic monastery with its cloister persisted (the quadrangle on the right), facade and dome of the minster St. Martin were designed by Donato Giuseppe Frisoni. Architect of the monastery wings was Joseph Schmuzer.

The huge Baroque building in the foreground is the monastery's former granary.

Because the monastery was founded 1056 by a Welf duke of Bavaria, you can see here a Bronze statue of the Welf lion.

The interior, 102 m long, by Franz Beer, decoration (frescoes and stucco work) by the Asam brothers, high altar by Donato Giuseppe Frisoni

It's a pity that it could only be realized in parts but it looks amazing anyway!

Peißenberg (Bayern): Wallfahrtskirche Maria Aich

Baroque architects and builders very often could not realize their plans completely, because they were megalomaniacally designed, hallmark of this grandiose era of art and architecture, everywhere delusions of grandeur.
I like it very much
They were not shy, kettledrums and trumpets.

Here a small, modest pilgrimage church by the architect and stuccoer Joseph Schmuzer: Maria Aich (1731-34, frescoes by Matthäus Günther, another famous artist of German Rococo), built for the Polling abbey (almost every Baroque monastery had its own prilgrimage church, a successful pilgramage church was a good source of revenue, helped to finance the often grandiose plannings for the monastery itself).
