High-Speed Rail Lines Around the World

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local...the_World.html

SHANGHAI, CHINA - JANUARY 28: (CHINA OUT) A passenger takes a photo of a CRH (China Railway High-speed) "bullet train" at Shanghai South Railway Station January 28 in Shanghai, China. In this configuration, two trains are linked at the pictured locomotives to make a longer train with greater passenger capacity. China's bullet train, the nation's fastest train, debuts for operation on the Shanghai-Beijing route today. The train can run at a top speed of 250 kph (155 mph), and would cut the journey time on the Beijing-Shanghai route from nine hours to five. (Photo by China Photos/Getty Images)

BEIJING - DECEMBER 17: Chinese workers pass by a pile of rail at the Beijing South Railway Station which is the starting station of Beijing-Tianjin Intercity High-speed Railway on December 17, 2007 in Beijing, China. Workers completed laying the tracks for the intercity high-speed railway between Beijing and Tianjin on December 16, the first of its kind in China. Designed for a full speed of 350 kilometers per hour, the railway will shorten the journey between the two cities from the current 70 minutes to around 30 minutes. Beijing-Tianjin Intercity High-speed Railway will be operational before the Beijing Olympic Games in next August. According to the blueprint of China Ministry of Railway, intercity high-speed railway network will be set up in the economic developed areas, including the Yangtze River Delta, the Bohai Sea Ring area and the Pearl River Delta, by 2020. SHANGHAI, CHINA - APRIL 8: (CHINA OUT) Passengers get on and off a high-speed magnetic levitation train on April 8, 2006 in Shanghai, China. The National Development and Reform Commission said on its Web site that the State Council has given the green light to a high-speed magnetic levitation train line between Shanghai and the resort city of Hangzhou. The 175 kilometer (110 mile) railway, which will be able to travel up to 450 kilometers per hour (280 mph), will cost RMB 35 billion (USD 4.3 billion), and begin this year, according to state media. SHANGHAI, CHINA - JUNE 7: (CHINA OUT; PHOTOCOME OUT) A police man walks past a billboard featuring a Maglev train, also known as the magnetic levitation train at a station on June 7, 2005 in Shanghai, China. Shanghai boasts the world's only commercial high-speed railway supported by maglev technology. The rail line, developed by Germany's Transrapid International Consortium, takes eight minutes to hurtle the 30 kilometres from Shanghai airport to the city's outskirts -- a journey which takes up to an hour by car. A magnetic charge lifts the train's sleek carriages, first of their kind in the world, one centimetre above the track. The train's top speed is 430 kilometres per hour. The Maglev line has impressed British Chancellor of the Exchequer Gordon Brown as he rode the train in February this year. And British Prime Minister Tony Blair has held a seminar to consider building a Maglev route along the spine of Britain through Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Newcastle and Edinburgh.
