Danish Shipowners Fear Islamic Boycotts

Danish owners fear Islamist boycotts

DANISH shipowners fear they may be unable to escape the backlash against their country that has spread across the Islamic world over the past week.

So far, the Middle East boycott of imports from Denmark has been confined largely to dairy produce.

Shipping, a business-to-business activity, has not yet been caught up directly in the crisis. But the Danish Shipowners Association said yesterday it was picking up rumours that trade councils and chambers of commerce in the region were considering extending sanctions to Denmark’s service industries — and that could include shipping.

“We are monitoring the situation very closely,” a director of the association said.

Should evidence emerge of an organised embargo of Danish exports rather than action by individual consumers, then the matter would immediately be referred to the European Commission or World Trade Organisation, he said.

Shipowners and Danish shipping executives contacted yesterday all said there had been no incidents so far and that, at this stage, it was business as usual. But they were also anxious to maintain a very low profile in such an inflamed situation.

“We are naturally in close dialogue with our customers and can add that restrictions for one reason or another on imports and exports are not uncommon and thus part of the daily life of a global carrier,” said one company.

Although shipments of Danish exports to the Middle East are being hit, sources pointed out that any number of shipping companies could be affected, and not just Danish-owned or Danish-flagged ships.

Iran ups duties for Danish shipping, may impose ban

TEHRAN, Feb 7 (Reuters) - Iran has raised duties on Danish-flagged shipping and could ban Danish shipping entirely from its ports in retaliation for the publication of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad, newspapers reported on Tuesday.

Danish shipping and oil company A.P. Moeller-Maersk, which has extensive interests in the world's fourth-largest crude oil producer, is likely to be most affected by the measure, announced by Iranian Commerce Minister Masoud Mirkazemi.

"The amount of duties on Danish ships entering Iranian ports will increase manifold from Tuesday to become equal to the rate that was effective in July 2003, and discounts will be eliminated," Mirkazemi was quoted as saying by the state-run Iran newspaper.

The minister, who on Monday announced a trade ban affecting $280 million annual imports from Denmark, said a working group was looking into setting "a date to totally prevent the entry of Danish ships into Iranian ports".

"Since some Danish companies have facilities and assets in some Iranian ports, a deadline should be given to them to remove them from Iran's ports."
