Sallies plan $18m 'spiritual facility'
Press, The; Christchurch, New Zealand, Jun 18, 2010 | by CONWAY Glenn The Salvation Army wants to spend $18 million on a new "spiritual facility" in central Christchurch. It follows moves by another social agency - the Christchurch City Mission - that wants to build a new $10m base in the inner city. The Salvation Army proposal, which stretches across land on Colombo and Salisbury streets and Gracefield Ave, would house its South Island divisional headquarters, church, church hall, parking and other activities. Several "tired looking" apartments and other buildings would be demolished, according to its resource consent application to the Christchurch City Council which was publicly notified yesterday. Divisional commander Major Clive Nicholson said the City Mission project did not compete with its plans, although he said both might yet be chasing the same public dollar. Most of the money would come from Salvation Army assets but a public fundraising campaign to cover any shortfall was possible. The application said its present operations were constrained by the location and layout of its facilities. The main aim was to provide a "spiritual base" for the Salvation Army in Christchurch. The 4217 square metre site included basement parking, a ground floor for more car-parking, a hall and auditorium, courtyard, its Hope Centre and activity and office space. The first floor included its divisional headquarters, staff room and board room. A worship hall for up to 350 people was also planned. Its problem- gambling advice, drug and alcohol rehabilitation centres and Opportunity Shop services would not be moved from existing sites. Nicholson said the project had been considered for many years and was "long overdue" for the city. The new building would accommodate 35 fulltime and part- time staff. Its application said the City Plan specifically gave exception to a "spiritual facility" in the inner city. The present site had several old apartment buildings that were in "a somewhat dilapidated condition" which gave a tired appearance to the area. Demolition and site clearance would happen between October and December, subject to consent being granted. Construction would take three months from next January. The Salvation Army had conducted "extensive consultation" with most surrounding residents and "generally, positive comments have been received". Changes to the original plans had been made to accommodate some feedback. The application said it would enhance the area. Public submissions close on July 14 |

There is a new apartment project for 268 Tuam st with 5 levels expected to start in september. I heard this from the tenders gazette. There will be very comepitive tendering for this project from the major companies as all are very desperate for work-it said.

My pick for next big building in Christchurch is on the corner of Armagh and Colombo. I'd watch that space...

That's a beautiful building. I hope they don't. Why can't they just redo their existing building to make it presentable? Or refit the Govt Life building in the Square which is just rotting. I think ChCh should fight for its quality old buildings and refit & modernise its old 80's dung-ers -- especially ones in prime positions like the square. The last thing we need is yet more cheap-and-nasty bank buildings like the ANZ in the Square, while other cheap-and-nasty ones are left empty (like Govt Life is now), and with heritage buildings being destroyed to accommodate the above. That is zero for 3!! I'm mad!! |

Yea someone needs to bowl the ANZ bldg on the Square, its atrocious! BNZ on the Square is actually alright I reckon. It's a decent size and the facade of glass and stone cladding looks quality.

The BNZ is originally from 1965 it has been refurbished many times with extra glass cladding and on top 2 levels they extended them out with new round glass frontage. They used a crane on it when it was modernised back in 1987 which was done by Luney's.

I hope not, but that's probably the only way we will see the ANZ go.
