Tourism Festival launched in Thua Thien Hue Province

Last update 15/02/2011 01:00:00 PM (GMT+7)

The central province of Thua Thien Hue will focus on developing four tourism products in preparation for the National Tourism Year 2012.

The first one named “Discovering Hue’s treasure” will give chances for tourists to uncover “10 unique features of the Nguyen Dynasty heritage” and “Hue’s culture – most interesting destinations”.

The second one, “Experiencing in Hue”,
will provide visitors with cultural and community activities.

The third one called “Enjoying in Hue” will meet the sightseers’ demands for relaxing through programs on resting, entertainment and using tourism products and services.

The last category called “Trans-time journey” will help travelers discover and experience the inter-regional and provincial culture and ecology.

The province regarded tourism as the key economic sector and will give priority to the sector’s development in the next five years, said Mr. Nguyen Van Cao, the Chairman of Thua Thien Hue People’s Committee.

Accordingly, the province has identified key and long-term missions such as bringing into full play the province’s valuable tourist destinations and products, creating a civilized tourist environment and increasing its attractiveness to domestic and foreign visitors.

This year, the province will launch the tourism stimulus campaigns entitled “Hue-truly Vietnam” and “Impressive Hue Grand Sale 2011-2012”, in an effort to draw more attention of local and foreign tourists.

Hue Palace gets royal restoration treatment

Last update 22/02/2011 03:24:37 PM (GMT+7)

VietNamNet Bridge – German restorers are using traditional Vietnamese methods to restore the facade of the Imperial Palace in Hue.

Beautiful facade: Buu Thanh Gate's beauty returns after restoration. — VNS Photo

Restoration work is currently being carried out on Buu Thanh Gate and screens around King Tu Duc's tomb.

The Germany foreign ministry has commissioned experts from the German Conservation, Restoration and Education Project (GCREP) to renovate six murals dating from the Nguyen kings in the lobby of An Dinh Palace.

The artwork is magnificent, but heavily damaged. Before attempting to restore the murals, team leader Andreas Teufel sent samples back to Germany for chemical analysis.

The team are using traditional mortar made from molasses, lime and sand to restore the works. Teufel said the restored parts of the palace will be indistinguishable from the original work.

"Previous restorers tried to preserve the original works but they didn't know how to do it properly and didn't have access to modern technology," she said.

"That was why relics at the site have largely been left unrestored. The work they did was far from perfect and bore little resemblance to the original. People in the past used different painting techniques. The Vietnamese restorers used modern pigments and techniques," she said.

"I discovered that the original painting technique was similar to that used in Italy."

The German restorers have used traditional pigments, which are applied to the wet mortar. The colour will be fixed when the mortar dries. Bacteria will grow on the walls during the drying process, which helps to make the artwork more durable.

The restoration work is in keeping with UNESCO's 1964 Charter.

According to Phan Thanh Hai, vice director of the Centre for Restoration of Hue Relics, the techniques used to restore the palace will be applied to other sites.

Vietnam’s treasures on display in RoK

03/03/2011 | 15:28:05

Almost 165 antiques dating from Vietnam’s Nguyen dynasty in the 19 century are currently on display in Gyeongju in the Republic of Korea (RoK) from February 28 - March 15.

The exhibition is a joint effort between the Gyeongju National Museum and the Monuments Conservation Centre in the former imperial city of Hue .

On addressing the opening ceremony, Gyeongju Mayor Choi Yang-rak and the Gyeongju Museum’s Director Yi Young-hoon said they hoped that the exchanges and cooperation between the countries in general and the two twinned cities in particular would prosper in the future.

Vietnamese Ambassador to the RoK Tran Trong Toan thanked the staff at Gyeongju’s Museum and the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre for organising the event, saying that he believed that the exhibition will prove popular with both RoK and Vietnamese visitors.

The antiques, such as ceramics, books cast in bronze and old royal clothes, help to offer an insight into the history and culture of the Southeast Asian nation under the Nguyen dynasty (1802-1945) as well as many other similarities between the two countries.

Earlier, a similar exhibition was held in the RoK National Palace Museum from Nov. 9, 2010 - Feb. 6, 2011./.

The festival is coming but it seems that nobody cares of it. On the street people can only see the panos with repeating and boring slogan "With great effort, build Hue worthy of the festival city of Vietnam !"
Boring with the working style !

Meet Vietnam’s best chefs and gardeners

The 2011 Hue traditional Crafts Festival celebrates local cuisine and the art of bonsai. From April 30th to May 3rd, 2011, the city of Hue is hosting its fourth bi-annual Traditional Crafts Festival. This year’s event will celebrate bonsai plants and cuisine with the theme: “Vietnamese Gastronomy in the Tranquility of Hue’s gardens”.

The area around Hue is home to many traditional crafts villages, some of which date back to the time when the Nguyen Lords chose Phu Xuan as the capital of Dang Trong (the Southern Territory). At the start of the 19th century the Nguyen Dynasty established their court in Hue. The best artisans from all over the nation settled around Hue to supply products to the royal court.

During the course of the city’s history, many local crafts villages fell into oblivion. In an attempt to revive some of these ancient trades, the provincial government started hosting Traditional handicrafts Festivals in 2005. The 2005 Hue Traditional Crafts Festival focused on conical hat making and embroidery. The 2007 event celebrated wood carving, bronze casting and jewelry-making. In 2009, pottery, lacquer and porcelain enamel were showcased.

Food and bonsai plants are integral of Hue’s identity. For generations, people in Hue have paid a great deal of attention to their gardens and their cuisine.
Visitors to the 2011 Hue Traditional Crafts Festival can discover Hue’s unique cuisine in traditional garden settings. Visitors will be charmed by coconut palms hanging over the river, bamboo footbridges, haystacks, green fields and wooden cottages surrounded by lush gardens.

Hue boasts hundreds of sophisticated dishes that were once served at the royal court, as well as vegetarian fare developed in the city’s many pagodas, and medicinal recipes. Eating a simple and healthy vegetarian meal served in a serene garden is a memorable experience, as is attending a banquet similar to those once held in Hue’s court.

Even everyday Hue food is special. Visitors can enjoyed “a party of salt”, in which many types of flavors salt accompany their diner, including muoi sa (salted lemongrass); muoi com (roasted young sticky rice with salt); muoi me (seasame and salt); muoi thit chay (salted shredded shrimp); muoi tieu (salt and black pepper); and muoi ot (salt and chilli).

Other highlights include a stunning variety of mam (fermented fish dishes), such as mam ca (picked eggplants in source fish sauce); mam tom (shrimp paste); mam ca com (soured anchovies);etc. The variety of com (rice) dishes is equally staggering. Visitors should be sure to sample com ghe (rive with sea crabs); com huong sen (lotus rice); and com chay (rice crust).

Also not to be missed are local specialities like bun bo (beef noodle soup), com hen (mussel rice), banh beo (steamed savoury rice cakes), banh nam (rice paste topped with fried shrimp), and banh loc (sticky tapioca flour dumplings)

When visitors have had their fill of Hue food they can sample authentic northern Vietnamese food. A “street corner in old Hanoi” will be reproduced at the fair. Here, visitors will find typical northern food and drinks, kids playing traditional games, and performances of traditional folk music like Ca Tru, Cheo and Hat xam.

Visitors will also have the chance to meet prominent culinary researchers and experts and talented bonsai artists at a seminar entitled “The Taste of Vietnamese Gastronomy and the Art of Bonsai”. Antique collectors and artists from all over Vietnam will attend the festival and present various activities. Children can join a cooking contest, and couples can cook together. Visitors who love Hue food so much that they’d like to learn how to make some back home can sign up for cooking lessons. Last but not least, tours to local pagodas, interesting sites are on offer throughout the festival.

Hue cuisine worthy of world’s recognition

Updated : Sun, April 24, 2011,8:37 AM (GMT+0700)

Hue cuisine tells so much about the way of life of Hue people and all Vietnamese that experts say it should be recognized by UNESCO as an intangible culture heritage.

Cuisine researcher Tran Duc Anh Son said Hue cuisine deserves to be recognized just like French, Mexican, or Mediterranean cuisine (which was recognized by UNESCO in 2010).

“The stature and value of Hue cuisine make it worthy of recognition,” Son said.

Though people often think about Nguyen Dynasty Imperial Court cuisine when they think about Hue cuisine, those who know Hue culture say food here is much more than those sumptuous dishes served for kings and queens.

Professor Le Van Hao, a former lecturer at what is now Hue University, said Hue cuisine, which is Hue culture’s third great contribution to the world after its architecture and music, is a philosophy of life to Hue people.

“Their philosophy of life says that life is art, and as art, it should be lived beautifully,” Hao said.

This philosophy translates into a cuisine that cares more about
quality than quantity (though the number of Hue dishes make up the bulk of the whole Vietnamese culinary repertoire) and is meticulously cooked and served, whether it is royal dishes such as pork hash arranged in a peacock shape or commoners’ mussel rice.

Mussel rice, which is made of steamed rice, mussel as well as dozens of vegetables and spices, is considered a quintessential Hue dish that testifies to what Doctor Nguyen Nha, Director of the Vietnam Culinary Research Institute, says about Hue culinary culture, “Hue people cook and eat with all their soul.”

This dish, which is said to be cooked by a Hue housewife with all of her soul, also shows another character of Hue cuisine: simple in ingredients. Nha said Hue dishes are strong in rice and seafood (which is used to make various kinds of sauce), typical of culinary practice of the tropical wet rice culture of Southeast Asia.

This simplicity in ingredients is perhaps best known in a variety of Hue rice cakes. Hue rice cakes, each of which has its own sauce, show a way of life that writer Tran Kiem Doan calls “poor but regal.”

Yet, all of this culinary beauty and richness is being threatened. Nha said hundreds royal dishes and thousands of folk dishes in Hue are likely to fade away.

“That’s why we should immediately draw up a proposal to UNESCO to recognize Hue cuisine,” he said.

Hue cuisine to converge at festival

Three strands of Hue cuisine (royal, folk, and vegetarian) will be showcased at the 4th Traditional Crafts Festival to be held from April 30 to May 3 in Hue City.

Titled Vietnamese Kitchen in Hue Garden, the festival will gather hundreds of culinary artisans from all over Vietnam.

Recent pics of Phu Bai airport in Hue

Just flew out of the Phu Bai airport in Hue, Vietnam for a flight to Hanoi. The airport appears a bit drab on the ground floor but there is a nice waiting lounge with shops upstairs.
Here are some pics from our trip:
