The never-completed TV Tower of Berlin

After implemtation of TV broadcasting in GDR a requirement for a TV tower arose in former Eastern Berlin. So one started on the Müggel Mountain in the Southeastern part of Berlin with the construction of a 130 metre tall TV tower built of concrete in 1954. It was planned to equip this tower with an observation deck in a height of 70 metres.
Unfortunately one forgot that the tower would be situated in the flight-in path of Berlin-Schönefeld airport and endanger the air traffic very much. So building the tower stopped in 1956. The stump was converted to a listen station of MfS.
For TV transmission an antenna on the radio mast Berlin-Koepenick was used until one started again with the construction of a TV tower in Berlin in the mid sixties - on Alexanderplatz as everybody knows!
