Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) is a passenger transport organisation providing bus services both within Gujarat and neighbouring states.

GSRTC came into existence on 1st May, 1960 on formation of Gujarat. From a modest begining of 7 divisions, 76 depots and 7 divisional workshops and a fleet of 1,767 buses it has gone to,

GSRTC provides a variety of services, These includes

Mofussil Services connect major cities, smaller towns and villages within Gujarat.

Intercity Services connect major cities - Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot. These provide a quick and cheap mode of transport.

Interstate Services connect various cities of Gujarat to the neighbouring states of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasathan

Parcel Services are available for transporting goods.

Soon, ST bus depots to get a facelift

BHARUCH: Almost 25 lakh passengers use the facilities of Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) daily. Looking at the increasing number of passengers, GSRTC has shown its willingness to improve the standard of 125 depots across the state. For this, 20 bus depots have been identified in the first phase.

Newly appointed chairman B H Ghodasara while speaking to TOI in his routine visit to Bharuch said, "We have decided to improve the standard of all the depots in the state. In the preliminary stage we have identified 20 depots -- which include Bharuch -- so that a corporate look can be given to them. We will develop the depots on public private partnership (PPP) model."

Ghodasara, a former IAS, visited all the bus stations of Bharuch division and guided the employees of GSRTC to follow the slogan "Yatri Devo Bhava". He said, "Soon, the listed 20 depots will have air-conditioned waiting rooms, passenger sitting facilities, canteen, staying facilities and security with the latest instruments."

GSRTC Volvo buses to turn wi-fi

In a month's time, all Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) Volvo buses would turn wi-fi. The trials for the wi-fi buses are on. Five more Volvo luxury buses are being introduced for Vadodara and Surat from Saturday.

"We have realized that many passengers, which include company executives and students from Ahmedabad and Surat, require wi-fi facility as they head towards industrial townships and institutional area. It is after keeping them in mind that we have introduced the wi-fi services," said a senior GSRTC official.

Two Volvo buses would run on the Bopal-Surat route, while three new Volvo buses would originate from Nehrunagar GSRTC bus stand. In all, the GSRTC runs 10 Volvo inter-city buses. Of these, three buses originate from the airport. The early morning bus starts for Jamnagar, the second bus at 11.30 am heads for Surat, while the evening 7.30pm bus heads for Vadodara. The GSRTC also has a Volvo service to Rajkot.

GSRTC to compensate accident victims

Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has decided to release compensation of Rs 1.50 crore amount to 300-odd victims of road accidents in Rajkot district caused by GSRTC buses.

Sources in the GSRTC said that the central office of GSRTC has decided to release the compensation to all applicants across the state by June 8.

There are 300 applicants who have applied in Rajkot division of GSRTC. That apart, there are about 4,000 victims of road mishaps across the state whose compensation is likely to reach a total of Rs 80 crore.

GSRTC starts Volvo buses to Vadodara, Surat

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat State Transport Corporation has introduced special Volvo and AC buses to Vadodara and Surat from Nehrunagar and Bopal.

Volvo buses from Nehrunagar to Vadodara will leave at 6 am, 8 am, 10.45 am, 11.45 am, 1.30 pm, 3.30 pm, 4.45 pm, 6.30 pm, 8 pm and 9.45 pm.

AC buses will leave at 6.30 am, 7 am, 9.15 am, 12.15 pm, 12.45 pm, 2.15 pm, 5.45 pm and 7.15 pm.

Volvo buses from Vadodara to Nehrunagar will leave at 8 am, 8.30 am, 9.15 am, 10.15 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 2.30 pm, 3.45 pm, 5.30 pm, 7 pm and 8.45 pm. AC buses will leave at 9 am, 9.30 am, 11.45 am, 3.15 pm, 4.45 pm, 8.15 pm and 9.30 pm.

From Bopal, Volvo buses to Surat will leave at 7.45 am, 5.30 pm and 8.30 pm. Volvo buses from Ahmedabad ST will leave at 8 am, 5.30 pm, 8.30 pm and 11.30 pm (Ambaji-Surat).

AC buses will operate from 6 am, 9 am, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3.30 pm, 4 pm, 5 pm, 7 pm and 10 pm. A Volvo from the airport will start at 11.30 am while one bus will leave from Krishnanagar at 6.20 am.

From Surat, Volvo buses will start at 11.30 am, 2.30 pm (up to Bopal), 5.15 pm and 11.15 pm. AC buses will operate from Surat at 5.20 am (up to Ambaji), 7 am, 8 am, 9 am, 10 am, 11 am, 12 noon, 1 pm, 2 pm, 3.15 pm, 3.45 pm and 4.30 pm.

GSRTC plans expansion of Volvos for pilgrims

Gujarat State Road and Transport Corporation is eyeing pilgrim places to get more business. The public transport is all set to extend its Volvo bus services to pilgrim places in Gujarat and other states.

“We have already begun the procedure to operate Volvo buses in states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, etc. Fifteen routes have been identified for inter-state Volvo services. Right now we are just trying to speed up the process,” G H Ghodasara, chairman of GSRTC, said.

The public transport has also initiated the process to procure 15 volvos for the purpose, at present the corporation has 10 such buses connecting Ahmedabad with Surat, Vadodara, Jamnagar and Rajkot.

According to an official source, the buses will be connecting pilgrim places like Ambaji, Somnath, Dwarka, and many more. “These are the places that have potential Volvo passengers. As the places are considerably far from Ahmedabad, commuters will prefer comfortable journey,” said the official.

According to the source, GSRTC is also considering the idea of package tour in Volvo buses. He said, “This will be an Ahmedabad to Ahmedabad package tour covering major tourist spots in the state. It will probably be a week-long tour.”

GSRTC will be signing an MoU with the Tourism Corporation of Gujarat to run buses in other states. “Talks are on with GSRTC for operation of our buses in other states with their help. Meanwhile, we have also sought permission from other states,” Ghodasara said.

The state public transport has to take permission from other states before operating buses legally in these states.

At present GSRTC has zeroed on destinations like Shirdi, Nasik, Pune, Mumbai, Delhi, Shrinathji, Aurangabad, Jaipur, Kolhapur and Mount Abu. Among these places, Pune, Aurangabad, Shirdi and Kolhapur will be connected with Surat, while Mumbai, Pune, Shirdi, Delhi, Jaipur, Mt Abu and Shrinathji will be connected with Ahmedabad.

According to an official, the main focus is on Mt Abu as number of people visiting the place are huge in number during winters.

Taking this into consideration, the public transport will also procure buses having heating facilities. “As the number of people going to Mt Abu is more during winters, buses having heaters can be a huge0 hit,” he said.

GSRTC to boost rural minibus service fleet in tribal districts

The Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) has decided to procure an additional 300 minibuses to ferry people between the 43 taluka headquarters and the villages in the tribal districts of the state.
GSRTC Chairman Babubhai Ghodasara flagged 15 such minibuses last week to add to the previously introduced 100 buses. Encouraged by their growing popularity among the rural students and the youth who have to cover short distances to schools and work places, the transport corporation plans to reach the projected fleet strength by the end of 2011-12 with a Rs 20 crore aid from the state government under Van Bandhu Kalyan Yojana (VBKY).
“Operation and maintenance of the buses is easy on the Corporation’s finances because of the low payload factor, speed and easy mobility, besides low fuel consumption, mileage and deeper access to the interior areas which are difficult for big buses to reach,” Ghodasara said.

A ticket for Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC) Volvos will soon be available in your neighbourhood. The state public transport will be granting franchises to individuals for sale of tickets exclusively for their Volvo buses.

This scheme is an attempt to regain the business GSRTC has lost over the years to private players. By giving services equivalent to private transport companies, the transport company hopes to increase its sales.

The franchise will be given to individuals, similar to the way it is done in railways and air-lines. At present the air-tickets and railway reservation is available through e-tickets in all areas. An official said, “This will be different from e-tickets as individuals will be purchasing real tickets from the franchise.”

The franchises will initially be present in areas where private players have a presence. Tejas Popat, who is in charge of the Volvo project said, “The idea is to attract people, who travel by private transport companies. The presence of a GSRTC outlet will certainly get us more passengers.”

Initially, the state transport will set up an outlet at Satellite in Ahmedabad and Limda Chowk in Rajkot, which are the hubs of private transport operators in these cities. The outlets will also be set in Jamnagar, Surat and Baroda. The particular areas in these cities will be finalised soon.

According to Popat, GSRTC has low fares compared to private operators despite providing similar services to passengers. Tejas said, “At present, passengers get tickets from GSRTC bus stations, whereas private operators have presence in many localities; this fetches more passengers for private operators.”
