Questions Regarding the Country

Hi guys! Random question here hope some jordanians can help, I'll be home in lebanon in the summer with an italian friend, we were thinking of doing also a quick trip in Jordan. So my question is, are organized tours good there or is it better to do everything ourselves, and how far is the Red sea coast from Amman? Too long by bus? Thanks in advance!

Hi! The Red Sea i.e. Aqaba is around 4 hours by bus from Amman (but Petra is halfway in between so maybe you could spend the night there in between), and the Dead Sea is around 40 minutes from Amman.

Ive never been on a tour so I wouldn't really know, but driving yourself should be easy enough for an Italian-Lebanese In any case here is the website for a good bus company that does tours as well I think http://www.jett.com.jo/english.htm

Hi everyone! I have a question regarding my trip to Jordan in early October and I think you can help. Are there any night time bus services from Amman to Petra? I have read that it is a lot better to arrive in Petra before 1100, when the attractions become crowded with tourists, so I thought about arriving there at 0700-0800. Is that possible? What about taxis, would the driver be willing to do a one-way run to Petra in the evening? Thanks a lot!

Not too sure about night time bus services to Petra. A taxi driver maybe willing to drive but he may charge more than required.

I advise you to check with your hotel if they can organise anything. Hotels in Amman are really good at organising trips to and from Petra.

It is better to arrive early but 7 may be a bit early. Try and get there around 8.30-9.

Thanks for your reply. I will check with my hostel (I have yet to book one - any suggestions?) if they can arrange something. I am actually doing a Istanbul-Cairo overland trip, so right now I am studying all my transport options in the countries I am visiting.

Is it expensive to travel around Jordan? I'll be there for 2 weeks in November. Is 1500 USD (I think around 1100 JOD) enough? I am a backpacker type traveller so I don't really need those fancy hotels and stuff.

1100 JDs should be enough, however I suggest you make a list of all the sites you want to visit prior to arriving to help plan your finances.

Thanks my brother from another mother I''ll go to Petra of course, Dead Sea, Wadi Rum, Mt. Nebo, in and around Amman, Jerash, Madaba.

Since I think I'll have lots of spare time during my visit, I'd love as well to hang out with locals

Do you think what happened in Tunisia and Happen in Egypt can affect Jordan ?

It seem to me that Jordan is pretty much the Morocco of Middle East. So I don't see it happening here, but I would like to know what people living here think of it.

I think the monarchy is not questionable in Jordan. All political parties and civil society demonstrators have never asked for a "regime change". The king is still viewed a symbol of stability in the country, and he is much well respected among Jordanians.

However, many Jordanians (including myself) think that Jordan should move on to a constitutional monarchy. That is, the king will keep his role as the head of state (and the army) but will not interfere in the day to day political and economic life. Also, the king would appoint a prime minister in according to the balance of power in the house of representatives.

As a conclusion, I think there is a pressure on the king for political reforms, but the monarchy itself is immune.

What's the best way to get from Damascus to Amman? Is the rail operational? What are the buses like? How about the border crossing, is it a hassle, does it take a lot?

You can use Hejaz railway( I am not sure if its operational or not) by train to go to Amman. Or you can travel by car to the jordanian border, they will only ask for your passport and thats all. The process is easy, its not like Saudi Arabia and ofcourse you will experience our jordanian hospitality. Have a Safe trip.

My question is one regarding a potential visit...

Myself along with some Canadian friends will be in Lebanon this summer... and one of our mutual friends will be heading down to Amman (as she is Jordanian). She wants us to visit... but we checked out pics on here of Amman and for the most part we don't see any street life or entertainment going on (just based off pics).

What exactly is there to do (aside from historic sites which we will already be going to anyways)...? If it is easier, when you guys are down in Jordan, or if you live there when you want to enjoy your weekend what is on the itinerary?

Hello Ramy,

West Amman has a vibrant night life (I wouldn't compare it to Beirut though). However,there are tons of cafes,restaurants, pubs and nightclubs. Some that come to mind are 51, Red, Living Room, Canvas, Centro, Nai, Champions, 8 club, Fizz, Trader's Vic, and of course you have many five star hotels that have several restaurants / bars. You can find all kinds of cuisine, Indian, Thai, Japanese, Italian, French, American, Chinese, Mexican, Cuban etc..Also many Irish and English pubs.
