New £60 million landmark building at Trent University

Trent University plans to demolish the existing Byron House located on Shakespeare Street which currently houses the Student Union. A new multi-million landmark building will then be built in its place to house a new state-of-the-art Student Union including bars, shops, a health centre and a night club. The development will also include the construction of new student accommodation composed of some 900 bedrooms. The university has stated that the building will be environmentally friendly and that it is aiming for BREEM status. The demolition of the current building is scheduled to take place in January 2012 and it is hoped that the new facilities could be ready by the start of the 2013 academic year.

It has been rumored that funding of this project will come from UPP, the private student accommodation provider who were responsible for the recent development on Trent University's Clifton campus.

For some reason, this reminds me of the Meadows Gateway, with the tall triangular building at the back, and the angled, sloping buildings. Maybe just me though :p

Looking good though Does anyone know when we will hear anymore on how big the project will be? etc

Thought universities were facing a funding shortfall, hence why NTU "have" to start charging £8,500/year for fees? Seems a bit outlandish to then go and throw sixty million on a union building.

This is also happening at many other universities. The students will be laregly footing the bill...

Since the building is almost exclusively for NTU students use, I don't see much problem with that. Universities are private organisations, it's up to them how they spend funds that they raise themselves surely, and up to students if they decide to apply to that Uni. Trent have needed to invest in some of their buildings for a while so this is welcome news.

The exiting buildings have taken hammering over the years, but i am not sure this stuff is needed I would have thought most students these days will be looking to economy in there education, NTU have done a huge investment in there facilities in the past ten years, nice, but theres your tuition fees.

Erm you do realise this is being privately funded? The university won't be paying a penny.

It's UPP? There's a rumour going round that it's Derwent (the owners of Trinity).

I'm a graduate now though

A planning application for this development has now been submitted to Nottingham City Council. The decision by the council on whether this development will be permitted to go ahead should have been made by the end of August.

Here is a link to the plans submitted to the council:

Nice, its much bigger projects than I thought. don't like the idea of putting shops, Bars and nightclub in there as it will take people away from the main city.

They are of very low quality though at the moment. The development is supposidly going to follow the Arkwright-Newton development in terms of quality specification which is very high indeed!

I am not arguing against the redevelopment, on the contrary I believe that this will be very good indeed for the university. The point that I was trying to address is the argument that 'the proposed high quality development may have the potential to keep a higher proportion of students on the campus', is valid as the current student union and bar is very poor and I would say 'run down'. Furthermore, I know many students currently would rather venture out into the city centre rather than attend the student bar.

Having said that, with the current uncertainty over the future of higher education it is important for the local economy that our universities continue to attract many students as they do contribute heavily towards the city's GDP. This development not only provides good high quality accommodation and high quality leisure facilities but also provides the university with a new lanmark building at the northern entrance to the campus which currently is an eyesore. This should go someway in helping to secure the university's future and hopefully the vibrant student economy of Nottingham.
