Very nice. What is happening on the site next to Central Station? I visited Cardiff a few months back and they were pulling down a relatively high rise building there...

That's the Heritage Gateway scheme (the first building on the list)
It was approved and they demolished the buildings already on site, then they redesigned it and submitted a new application. Now that application is awaiting a decision and construction should begin soon after ... hopefully

I thought so, just wondered why it said 'proposed'. I see why now, thanks. Hopefully it will go through the system quickly as it looks a great scheme and is in a good location.

Thanks mate, I'll be finishing in Singapore in about a month's time but I wont be back in Cardiff until the end of July because I will be traveling around China, Korea and Japan for about two months. I cant wait to go traveling but it'll be a long trip, I imagine by the end of it I'll be happy to relax back at home! I look forward to going on a photo taking trip around Cardiff with my brand spanking new Canon EOS 20D digital SLR, hopefully I'll get some great shots. Till then though I'll be shooting thousands of photos of various Asian cities! Maybe I'll be able to do an east asia travel gallery in the old library on the Hayes or maybe in the foyer of St David's Hall or even the foyer of the Millennium Centre if they're good enough! That would be cool, maybe I can sell a few as well, lol!

I havent seen you for a while on here, I miss you! It's good to have your contribution to the discussion.

Great work Andrew!

With all this development going on in Cardiff (and Swansea and Newport) we surely deserve a S. Wales area forum.

Andrew

What a brilliant job- thanks very much!

One or two others occur to me. Roath basin and the bridge ,offices opposite the Assembly ( but no renders, I think), the hotel on the triangular piece of land next to the Central Hotel ( which I understand, perhaps wrongly, is going to start soon), Callaghan Square next to Jacobs Wharf ( due to start in July, but no renders as far as I am aware), Royal Hamadryad hospital/ retirement village, the old BT Building on Adam Street ( University of Glamorgan) and the infill site just off Mountstuart Square ( going up at present).

Other sites "to be watched" are the remainder of Callaghan Square ,Westgate Plaza, the Bus Station, rest of Callaghan Square, ,the Coal Exchange ( which although not new build is worthy of observation- I understand that Macob, who own the building, are in talks with a London "loft" company; it would be good to see that back to its old splendour) , the Butetown Police Station( to be replaced by a new Police Headquarters), and Dumballs Road generally.

I can also see potential at the old Heron House in Newport Road ( which has been empty for as long as I can remember , despite a naff attempt at re branding it as Eastgate House or something), the empty site next to the Holland House Hotel ( nice Welsh name there!), and Odd Fellows house on Newport Road ( opposite Holland House)which has been sold - or is being sold- for re-development- surely a tower opportunity there!

Can anyone think of any others?

Oddfellows is in the process of be redeveloped at the moment apparently - I'll miss it's tacky 1970's working mans club interior. I doubt anything big will happen there as it's one of the few original buildings left at that end of Newport Road - so I guess it'll end up as flats.

bay pointe looks fantastic, shame it's not on the other side to the city that way everyone one would see it on they're way in from the m4, still, very impressive though.

I think Newport Rd has a huge amount of potential. What's happening with the old Odeon site at the end of Newport Rd? There was speculation of something tall going up there about a year ago... a tower here would be a great way of 'anchoring' Newport Rd.

Roath Basin is there (unless you mean something different to Roath Basin Southside). I'll add the others when we get renders for them or at least know a little bit more info.

I didnt know there were so many 'to be watched' sites in the city centre, Newport Road especially could be awesome!!

It's in the whole complex where Virgin is and quite close to Queen Street station... around the back near the car park. It's been empty for many years now.

Lol, this is the one I mean:

Quote:
Roath Basin Southside

Status: Pre-Planning
But maybe we're both thinking of two different projects and I've missed the one you're thinking of out. lol

Remember the Odeon cinema at the back of the Capitol Shopping Centre opposite Queen Street station that closed a few years back? Well apparently there are plans to build flats on that site. How they're gonna do it considering it's a part of the shopping centre building and it's associated multi-story car park I reallydon't know! All I remember was that there was a pretty substantial number of flats involved and it's not a large area so we thought there was a distinct possibility it would be high-rise, possibly as tall or even taller than neighbouring Landmark Place.

nice work Andrew

I'v been lurking for a while but nows the time to speak up

isn't the lighthouse complted on prospect place? Isn't that taller than Cardiff University Tower block?

anyway, great stuff all round keep it up....

NB was on the train pulling into cetnral station today, don't get to excited about the cladding on Callaghan Square development, it doesn't look great, maybe it is early doors so time will tell...

^ Welcome to the forums.

I was wondering when cladding would start on that, although I am not surprised that it is going to be rather uninspiring. It seems like it'll be a building of simular standard of the AXA building that used to be opposite. I would how the floor space compares between the two, it seems strange to demolation a building for another project only to build something equal to that that was demolished on an adjacent plot .

Has the Central Hotel demolition been completed yet?

I've been wondering if anything will be done on the old Capital Odeon site. It is a prime location, already surrounded by many tall buildings. Yet it has been vacant for what must be 5-6 years now.

BTW, great thread Andrew, really shows how much Cardiff is changing when you lump everything together in one post. .

Actually no, it isn't taller. The lighthouse's location on a waterfront plot in the bay gives it a more prominent position so it stands out more and appears larger in it's context (though not for long since it'll soon have a 19 floor tower almost next door). Both buildings are 12 floors high but since the lighthouse is residential use, its floor to ceiling heights are less than those of the university tower building. In total the lighthouse is approximately 36m tall and the university tower building is 50m.

Welcome to the forums by the way! The number of Welsh forumers is just growing and growing!! Yay!
