Beginnings Since the decade of the 50’s, the Fonalledas family wanted to develop a regional shopping center in a land that was part of the Tres Monjitas dairy plant, that also belonged to the family. The construction started in April of 1967 and on September 12, 1968 opened its doors for the first time the premier shopping center of Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, Plaza Las Américas. The original mall had 800,000 sq. ft. and was described as an urban center, a quality that is sustained today. Plaza Las Américas is positioned today as the ideal place for shopping, dining and entertainment.

Looks like a good mall. Is it in an affluent suburb?

No. It's sort of sandwiched in between a mixed-use commercial/industrial area (though now much less industrial than before) and a housing project/commie block. However, it is only five minutes away by car from some affluent suburban and urban neighborhoods.

It is also the main mall for many of the neighboring islands near Puerto Rico...US Virgin, Trinidad & Tobago etc.

Caribbean islanders flock to this cneter to do their upscale shopping

Nope. In the USVI they have plenty of small strip malls, one or two large discount stores (K-Mart to be exact), one or two Puerto Rican supermarkets (Pueblo), and a lot of Puerto Rican bank branches (Banco Popular, mostly). The only upscale shopping outlet is downtown Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, which is geared up for tourists and consists almost completely of jewelry, hard liquor, and cigars (all of which are cheaper and perhaps more varied than in Puerto Rico or the mainland due to the town's status as a free port; many Puerto Ricans go there to buy exotic spirits, jewelry, and cigars). For everything else (clothing, electronics, etc.), Plaza Las Américas is the main venue in the Caribbean, and as such, Virgin Islanders just love to go there

Nope, that's only a small part of it. That's actually an office tower located on top of the shopping centre. And that picture was taken from the top level of one of its two multi-level parking garages.

Here's the whole thing:

There are lots of malls in the US that are incorporating other uses, such as commercial office space and residential apartments to diversify the offerings.

Here's an example: http://www.icsc.org/srch/apps/newsds...75&region=main

It's the biggest in central america and the caribbean... It's very big, but they own a lot of unknowed brands stores, so it's kind of bored. But it's the crowest i've ever meet. Anyway, it's a nice mall.

Beautiful Mall...

I have heard of it actually...some of the larger stores (Sears, Macy's, JCPenny) are in the same regional divisions as the ones here...
