Wow - I went to Google Maps Street view and found basically the same perspective of Wichita as the photo of 1952 Wichita.
All I can say is wow, what happened? I thought cities are supposed to get more developed over time, but it looks like they tore down a number of once prominent buildings and replaced them with a few trees. Makes me wonder how many cities went through a similar sort of backwards development? http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&sour...,3.69,,0,-0.21 That's the link to see the street view, look at that and look at the Wichita 1952 picture looking down the same street. Kinda sad! I wish it still looked like '52 hehe. |

Wel that's the price North American cities had to pay. Because of the massive suburbia, cities got decentralized. By the 80ties it got so far that much of the innercity parts where now empty and rundown, so they got demolished. Room was made for office buildings and the citer center no longer serves for living, shopping, working and everything. Now most North Americans city centers are empty afther working hours, what's left is endless suburbia around an giant office park. As an European I find this history of NA city very sad...
