Copterline relaunches helicopter service between Tallinn & Helsinki.



After several troublesome years and close-bankruptcy situations,Copterline has manage to keep their plans of restoring Tallinn-Helsinki helicopter line in secret. On 29th July Line-Support Oy registered AugustaWestland 139 helicopter in Finland and has aquired permissions for operating from Hernesaari,Helsinki. Line-Support Oy will operate Tallinn-Helsinki route under Copterline brand.

First flights should commence in next week.

The development of the next stage of International Airport Riga's reconstruction and infrastructure project will allow the aviation industry in Latvia to remain the most competitive in the Baltics, as well as compete with airports in Northern Europe, Transport Minister Uldis Augulis (Union of Greens and Farmers) said today during a presentation of the airport's development project.

Construction work will begin next spring, and is scheduled to be completed sometime in 2013.

The most expensive part of the project will be the reconstruction of two aprons, increasing the number the capacity of the airport's second apron from eight to 13 planes, and the capacity of the third apron from 11 to 22 planes. The total cost of the reconstruction of the airport's aprons is planned at LVL 21 million, according to the airport's chairman Arnis Luhse.

The project also includes the strengthening of the airport's runway safety, by improving the foundation of the grass area next to the runway, LETA/ NOZARE.LV reported.

As reported, the European Commission (EC) has given the go-ahead for the major Cohesion Fund project – “Development of Infrastructure at the International Airport Riga”, which includes re-paving the runway, modernizing lighting and constructing additional maneuvering arteries.

Total costs for the project are estimated at LVL 66.94 million, with co-financing from the Cohesion Fund at LVL 41.11 million. The airport will itself invest LVL 26 million in the project.

The to-be renovated runway is 2.47 kilometers long and 45 meters wide. The new lighting is specifically meant for takeoff and landing in inclement weather, and emergency landings. Two special de-icing platforms are also to be built.

Estonian Air plans to reopen Tallinn-Vilnius line in 5th September,claiming that "start of business season bring growth in demand"
Flights commence on workdays,8 flights per week. Starting from October,Estonian Air plans to add further more flights to Tallinn- Vilnius.

In next week Flybe announces new routes from Estonia,on a press conference organized by the company in Tallinn. Tallinn & Tartu are both said to be receiving Flybe routes.

Tallinn will get the Flybe Nordic route, no doubt as it's just transformed Finncom route. Not so sure about viability of Tartu in winter season.

Actually, they already are in Riga! WizzAir offers flights Riga-Oslo and Riga-London.

According to Estonian news, at noon a Ryanair flight from Brussels (Charleroi) to Riga made an emergency landing at Riga after noticing a gear malfunction. The captain is said to have asked passengers to "pray" and they had thought of landing on water.

But since I can't find absolutely anything about this in English, I think it is extremely exagerated.


edit: And since the plane could do to next leg back to Brussels a few hours after landing in Riga, I doubt there was any really serious malfunction...

Our evening news tell that the situation was quite stressed, there were five teams of paramedics as well as police and firefighters on the site. Airplane was circling above Riga, while the specialists tried to find out whether the undercarriage is working or not. They circled above Riga from 10:15 to 12:38 and finally landed safely.

New Regional Carrier to Open Six Routes

UK-based low-cost air carrier Flybe announced on August 24 that it will start operating five routes between Estonia and Finland and one route between Tallinn and Stockholm.

According to Flybe, six weekly Tartu-Helsinki, Vaasa-Tallinn and Oulu-Tallinn one-way flights will be established between late-October and the beginning of November. In addition, three Tampere-Tallinn and Tallinn-Stockholm one-way flights will also be introduced along with a daily Turku-Tallinn round-trip.

On August 18, Finnair and Flybe bought Finnish Commuter Airlines, creating the new joint venture Flybe Nordic AB. "Our joint vision is for Flybe to become the leading regional airline for the Nordic and Baltic regions," said Mike Rutter, managing director Flybe Europe.

Flybe is currently Europe's largest regional carrier, operating over 180 routes to 65 European airports.

Very good news for Tartu especially, since flights to Riga have been suspended if I'm not mistaken.

Estonian Air was planning to open up to 6 new routes to Finland. I guess now they have to find a new "plan".

Estonian daily newspaper "Eesti Päevaleht" writes that in order to rescue the national flag carrier, Estonian Air, it needs up to 400 mio eur investment. According to EA's president, Tero Taskila, their vision for the next 4 years would be to increase the current fleet from 7 airplanes to 15 and to offer 30 lines to the most important cities. He adds, "We are considering 35 new destinations".

400 million euros is a really big sum of money for a country like Estonia, but we do need a functional flag carrier. However, if we take into consideration how carelessly Eesti Energia (Estonian energy company) throws money into the wind or how eager our coalition is to "save" Greece, it doesn't seem like such a big amount of money after all.
