The mataf IS in need to be extended. During peak periods the existing area is too small and it can become a crush.

There's nothing sacred or special in the haram except the Kaba. The comfort and safety of people are more important so I'm fully in support of the changes to accommodate more pilgrims.

I'm with mesch and al-rayyan on the mataf expansion. Make it cricular, make it 5 floors like mas'aa (basement, ground floor, 1st floor, 2nd floor, roof) and enough. What purpose would adding just one floor to the existing design do? Am I more intelligent than the students and professors who did the mataf expansion research???

There must be a good reason why they didn't presented the perfect circular plan of the mataf. Maybe the 2 plans presented are easier to build with ppl abord because they can't close the mosque.

I remember when they repaired the shape of the King AbdulAziz expansion, didn't distrub anyone. They should make sections, Its not that hard.

Tunnels

They are constructing pedestrian tunnels at the edge of the expansion site.

We can clearly see one between the 2 minarets on this pic.
