Well considering all the recent projects coming (30/10 rail/subway expansion, downtown streetcars, the continuing revitalization of DTLA, Wilshire Grand towers, etc.) L.A. will hopefully function more like a REAL city in the next 10 years.
But I think L.A. can actually make history in 10 years as the only sprawling sunbelt city in the U.S. with the largest transportation system. I don't know what the total track miliege will be after the 30/10 initiative projects are completed but I read somewhere that it would make it the second largest, surpassing Chicago. I'm not sure if that's true though.

I didn't mean it in a negative way. But yes a traditional city is what I meant to say.

I wish people would stop saying "sprawling sunbelt city" as if LA was in the form of Houston and Phoenix. All metros sprawl and LA sprawls the least remember it's #1 in metro density.

Dunno I think greater LA has quite a lot of sprawl...I would think that of any urban area a hundred miles east to west and almost as much north to south. But I guess I see sprawl more in terms of geographic footprint and decentralization rather than in terms of average density.
